Doris J. Drake, 95, of Franklin, former Shelby County resident

Doris J. Drake, 95, of Franklin, former Shelby County resident, passed away Sunday, October 10, 2021 at Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin.

 

Born March 17, 1926 in Shelbyville, she was the daughter of Samuel G. McVey and Florence M. (Pereira) McVey.  She married John N. Drake on March 20, 1955 and he preceded her on July 26, 1992.

 

Survivors include 4 sons- David Drake (wife Amelia) of Hendersonville North Carolina, John Drake (wife Cathy) of Westfield, Tim Drake (wife Melissa) of Shelbyville, Terry Drake (wife Linda) of Rushville, one daughter- Lisa Burton (husband Mike) of Flat Rock; daughter-in-law Diana Drake of Arizona; brother Don McVey (wife Millie) of Shelbyville; 17 grandchildren, and several great and
great great grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, a son Jim Drake,
daughter Karen Wheeler, stepson Dick Drake, and brother Howard McVey.

 

Mrs. Drake was a lifelong resident of this area, and graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1944.

 

She had been a pharmacy assistant at Walmart for 13  1/2  years, retiring in 2010.  She had earlier been a Title 1 reading tutor for 22 years with Rush County Schools.  She was a member of Crossroad  Community Church, and a 50 year member of First Baptist Church.  She was also a 50 year member of Norristown Eastern Star, a member of Manilla Town & Country Home Economics Club since 1963, and volunteered at the Major Heart Center for several years.

 

Doris loved to sing in church choirs and cantatas, cooking, and spending time with her family.  Many families enjoyed her Christmas cookies she would bake and deliver every year, especially for them.

 

Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Friday, October 15, 2021 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, with Pastor Mick Saunders officiating. 

 

Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, at a later date.

 

Friends may call on Thursday evening, October 14, 2021 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm, at the funeral home.

 

Memorial contributions can be made to Shelby County Cancer Association, in care of the funeral home.
