Marjorie Ellen Ostermeier (nee Tongret) of Wheaton, Illinois

Marjorie Ellen Ostermeier (nee Tongret) of Wheaton, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2022, eleven years to the day after her husband, Raymond.

She was 101 years and 8 months old and was surrounded by people who adore her. Born to Anne and Bland Tongret in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1921, she married the president of her high school class and love of her life, Ray, shortly after the unexpected death of her father in 1941. They have three devoted children, Robert, Janet and Maurice, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Raised on Brandywine Dairy Farm near Carrollton, Indiana with her two sisters (Betty and Virginia) and brother (Charles), she was no stranger to working with her hands, wrapping butter in waxed paper, snapping beans, harvesting cherries, and canning tomatoes with her mother and daughter. She continued gardening on Webster Avenue in Wheaton into her 90’s.

She inherited her father’s artistic abilities demonstrated by her wool hooked rugs, patchwork quilts and handmade garments. She never met a scrap of paper she did not keep, or a swatch of fabric she could not reuse. She was an avid reader, a Cubs fan (TV on, sound off and radio on), a lover of puzzles, and dominos every day at 1 PM with her friends.

She loved fiercely and is loved by everyone she met. Active members of Gary United Methodist Church, Wheaton, since 1964, Marge and Ray were committed to service as they volunteered at the Wesley Shoppe and participated in church leadership.

She is preceded in death by so many. She leaves behind children Robert Ostermeier (Linda), Maurice Ostermeier (Kathy), Janet Ostermeier; grandchildren Cindy Hooker (Fred), Jennifer Ostermeier (Samir), Kendra Singelais (Robert II), Mackenzie and David Ostermeier; great grandchildren Anna Hooker, Jonah and Aida Oufkir, Brianna and Leo Singelais; great-great grandchild Ellianna Singelais.

A Memorial Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 27 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 19 E. Main St., New Palestine, IN, with visitation from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to The Caring Fund of Gary United Methodist Church, 224 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL, 60187 or to the Hancock County Food Pantry, 741 S. State Street, Greenfield, IN, 46140.
