Erin Diemer became the first Southern Illinois woman to win the pole vault competition in the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoors Championships Friday in Carbondale, Illinois.

Diemer, a senior from Shelbyville, Indiana, cleared 12 feet, 11.5 inches to secure the victory over Illinois State’s Nicole Bagwell (12-7.5).

Diemer (photo, center) cleared 12-11.5 on her first attempt and watched Bagwell fail to clear the height on three different attempts.

Northern Iowa’s Cierra Laux finished third at 12-1.5. Rounding out the top five were Indiana State’s Selene Weaver (11.7.75) and Illinois State’s Alexandra Cranston (11-1.75).

The three-day MVC Outdoor Championships wrap up today in Carbondale.
