Shelbyville softball ranked No. 8 in state coaches poll

A 2-1 win over top-ranked Shelbyville vaulted Yorktown to the top spot in this week’s Softball Coaches Association of Indiana’s Class 3A state poll.

Yorktown was ranked No. 7 in last week’s poll but secured a 2-1 victory Saturday in Shelbyville to improve to 4-0 and take over the top spot.

The rest of the 3A top 10 includes Tri-West Hendricks, Scottsburg, South Bend St. Joseph, Benton Central, Danville, Guerin Catholic, Brownstown Central, Gibson Southern and Franklin County.

With the Hoosier Heritage Conference loss to Yorktown, Shelbyville dropped to 6-2 this season and fell two spots in this week’s Class 4A poll to No. 8.

Defending state champion Roncalli remains No. 1 in 4A with Lake Central, New Palestine, Columbus North, Bedford North Lawrence, Mooresville, Noblesville, Shelbyville, Whiteland and Pendleton Heights giving chase.

Shelbyville’s only other loss this season came to Columbus North. The Golden Bears already have wins over Mooresville and Pendleton Heights.

The Hoosier Heritage Conference has four schools ranked in the top 10 and a fifth, Greenfield-Central, receiving votes in the 4A poll.

Pioneer is the No. 1 team in Class 2A.

Hebron is No. 2 followed by South Vermillion, Sullivan, Union County, Madison-Grant, Evansville Mater Dei, Frankton, Eastern Hancock and Eastern (Greentown).

Tecumseh is No. 1 in Class A for a second consecutive week.

West Central moves up to No. 2 followed by Clay City, Barr-Reeve, Fremont, West Washington, Northeast Dubois, Cowan, North Daviess and Trinity Lutheran.

Hauser is ranked No. 11.
