Collegiate update: Shelbyville grad named HCAC Female Sprinter of the Year

With a trio of first-place finishes and a runner-up spot to her credit, Hanover’s Zaleeya Martin was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s Female Sprinter of the Year after the recent HCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Martin (photo, center, white head band), a Shelbyville graduate, won the 100 meters in 12.45 seconds and finished second in the 200 (25.96) at the event held Friday and Saturday at Hanover College.

She also was part of Hanover’s winning 400 relay team (49.69) and 1,600 relay team (4:09.15) which helped the Panthers to a second-place finish in the women’s team standings behind Manchester.

Also competing at the HCAC championship meet were Franklin College’s Jill Anspaugh, Taylor Tatlock and Dalen Williams and Rose-Hulman’s Kenneth Gipson.

 

 

Anspaugh, a Shelbyville graduate, finished eighth in the 5,000 (21:36.07) and eighth in the 10,000 (44:21.36).

 

 

Tatlock, a Southwestern graduate, placed second in the javelin (122 feet, three inches) and sixth in the discus (111-8).

 

 

Williams, a Waldron graduate, finished fourth in the discus (141-5).

 

 

Gipson, a Triton Central graduate, finished 17th in the discus (113-8) and 14th in the hammer throw (119-10).

Madisen Hinderliter

The Shelbyville graduate placed seventh in the discus (111-6) and eighth in the hammer throw (111-11) for St. Francis (Ind.) Friday in the Grace Lancer Invite in Winona Lake, Indiana.

 

 

Elizabeth Kemper

The Triton Central graduate shot a 2-over par score of 74 Tuesday, tied for the lowest round of the day, to help No. 19 Taylor to a runner-up finish at the Crossroads League Championship at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana.

Kemper’s 74 followed rounds of 83 and 75 for a three-round score of 232 which left her tied for seventh overall in the individual standings.

Indiana Wesleyan, ranked No. 16, defeated Taylor, 911-913 to end Taylor’s four-year run as conference tournament champion.

Taylor must now wait until May 13 to learn if it will receive an at-large selection into the NAIA National Championships which are held May 24-27 at Lincoln Park West in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

 

 

Damon Lux

The Shelbyville graduate had a home run and scored two runs Sunday for Duke in a 14-2 win over High Point.

The Blue Devils are 19-24 this season.

 

 

Hannah File

The Shelbyville graduate went 2-for-4 with a home run Saturday in Louisville’s 5-3 loss to Virginia.

In game one Friday, Louisville defeated the visiting Cavaliers, 5-4. File had a double and a run batted in.

On Sunday, Louisville won the series with a 9-4 victory. File again had a double and a run batted in.

The Cardinals are 26-21 this season. They play at the University of Illinois Chicago tonight ahead of a three-game series beginning Friday at Notre Dame.

 

 

Erica Henry

The Shelbyville graduate pitched 1.1 innings of relief Saturday for Olney Central College in a 9-7 loss at Kaskaskia College. She allowed three hits and one run.

On Thursday, Henry allowed two hits and two runs in one inning of relief work in an 8-0 loss to Lake Land College.

Olney is 29-24 this season.

 

 

Addisenn Weaver

The Shelbyville graduate went 1-for-2 with a walk Saturday for Valparaiso in a 6-2 loss at Illinois State.

In the series finale, Weaver had a hit and a run batted in for the Beacons (12-31, 3-21 Missouri Valley Conference) in a 7-4 loss.

 

 

Cory Taylor

The Shelbyville graduate went 1-for-4 with a run scored for Eastern Michigan Friday in a 6-5 win over Bowling Green.

Eastern Michigan is 19-25 (13-15 Mid-American Conference) this season.

 

 

Katie Mathies

The Shelbyville graduate had a double, a walk and scored a run Monday in No. 6 DePauw’s 9-3 loss at Hiram that marked the end of the regular season.

The loss ended the Tigers’ 18-game win streak and a 45-game conference win streak dating back to 2018 but the North Coast Athletic Conference title was already secured.

DePauw (31-7, 15-1 NCAC) is the No. 1 seed and host school for the NCAC Tournament. The Tigers will face Wooster Friday in the second game of the tournament.
