Prep Report: Brooks' big hit propels Waldron to MHC win over Morristown

Jared Brooks’ third hit of the game gave Waldron the lead in the top of the seventh inning and Jacob Bennett held off a Morristown comeback attempt for a 7-6 victory Thursday at Morristown.

With Waldron trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh, Brooks drove in two runs with his third hit and the Mohawks added two more runs to take a 7-4 lead.

Morristown scored twice in the bottom half of the sixth inning but could not secure the game-tying run.

Bryce Yarling collected the win for Waldron (5-15, 3-6 Mid-Hoosier Conference), pitching 6.1 innings and scattering six hits while striking out 10. Bennett struck out the only two batters he faced to get the save.

Grant Kessler had 15 strikeouts on the mound for Morristown (8-8, 4-3 MHC).

The two teams will meet again today at Waldron.

Triton Central 194, Scecina 206

At Pleasant Run Golf Course, Chase Chandler collected his first medalist honor of the season after shooting a team-low 39 to lead Triton Central to the win.

Softball

Morristown 11, Waldron 1

A 6-run fourth inning allowed Morristown to pull away for the conference victory.

Nevaeh Cox had three hits, scored three runs and drove in five for Morristown (8-7, 4-3 MHC). Katie Theobald had two hits and Alexia Rogers scored two runs.

Rhylee Coppage pitched a complete game, allowing just one hit and one walk to the Mohawks (3-9-1, 3-6 MHC).

The two teams square off again today at Waldron.

Girls tennis

Morristown 3, Knightstown 2

At Morristown, the Yellow Jackets’ No. 2 doubles pairing of Ashlee Ballinger and Katie Hillock pulled out a three-set victory, 6-1, 1-6, 10-4 to seal the victory.

At No. 1 singles, Morristown’s Sarah Essex defeated Becca Waggoner, 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Abby Mendoza topped Jacey Holars, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

Morristown forfeited the No. 3 singles match and Bri Flores and Olivia Trlak were defeated at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-4.

Triton Central 4, Heritage Christian 1

At Triton Central, the host Tigers (11-9) swept the singles matches and added a No. 2 doubles victory.

Lauren Grant and Audrey Canter defeated Emily Nutter and Sophia Pizzaro at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, 7-5.

At No.1 singles, Maryrose Felling bested Isabelle Papineau, 6-3, 6-1. Hallie Schweitzer secured a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Hazel Ritz. And Maddy Brown added a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kaylee Murray at No. 3 singles.

Heritage Christian’s Madi Bull and Sami Reinhart defeated TC’s Courtney Washburn and Kaylynn Washburn at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-2.

Franklin 5, Shelbyville 0

The Grizzly Cubs remained undefeated with a win at Shelbyville.

Boys track

Hoosier Heritage Conference Meet

Mt. Vernon 166, Greenfield-Central 142, Delta 96, New Palestine 74.6, Yorktown 74, Pendleton Heights 43.2, Shelbyville 17.6, New Castle 8.6

At Mt. Vernon, Ethan Lambert scored Shelbyville’s best finish with a solid performance in the discus. The junior’s best throw of 142 feet, seven inches earned him a third-place finish.

Also scoring top-eight finishes for Shelbyville were Beau Kenkel with an 8th-place finish in the 1,600 (4:53.91) and Logan Page with a 7th-place finish in the high jump (5-4).

All three Shelbyville relay teams scored points.

Keagan Turner, Colten Sherwood, Blake Hughes and Christian Powell placed sixth in the 400 relay (45.96).

Powell teamed with Elijah Von Werder, Ben Price and Connor Zobel to finish sixth in the 1,600 relay (3:48.55).

Von Werder, Price, Hughes and Kenkel finished fifth in the 3,200 relay (8:54.74).
