Prep Report: Triton Central tennis crowned Indiana Crossroads Conference champions

Triton Central had the match victory in hand before Maryrose Felling went deep into a third set at No. 1 singles. The freshman delivered another win for Triton Central with a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 15-13 win over Cat Erwin that finished off a 4-1 victory Friday.

With the win, Triton Central improved to 12-9 overall and 5-0 against conference opponents to secure the Indiana Crossroads Conference title.

Triton Central got strong performances from Hallie Schweitzer and Maddy Brown in singles matches. Schweitzer defeated Ella Wiegand, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles while Brown rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Rachel Murphy at No. 3 singles.

TC’s No. 2 doubles team of Lauren Grant and Audrey Canter bested Dani Taylor and Maddy Franklin, 6-1, 6-4.

Lutheran’s only win came at No. 1 doubles where Malin Bullock and Rachel Bolton defeated Courtney Washburn and Kaylynn Washburn, 6-1, 6-2.

The Tigers also won all five junior varsity matches. Singles victories came from Allison Howley, Olivia William and Jenna Cox. Olivia Reedy and Brooke Bear won at No. 1 doubles and Lucy Spall and Caydence Stout were successful at No. 2 doubles.

Baseball

Shelbyville 15, Whiteland 5

In a matchup of first-round sectional opponents, Shelbyville scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and rolled to a five-inning run-rule victory over Whiteland (10-11).

Aiden Smith and Gavyn Fisher combined to drive in seven runs. Fisher went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Luke Brinkman also had two RBIs.

Kade McNicholas pitched into the fifth inning to earn the win. The junior allowed six hits and five walks while striking out four. Brinkman secured the final out in the top of the fifth and the Golden Bears added six runs in the bottom half of the inning to end the game.

Whiteland will get a rematch with Shelbyville (12-11) on May 24 in the second game of the East Central Sectional.

Morristown 6, Waldron 5

Morristown scored five runs in the first and added a much-needed sixth run in the fourth inning to split the two-game series with Waldron.

Bryce Bryant pitched six innings and allowed six hits and six walks while striking out four to secure the victory for the Yellow Jackets (10-8, 6-3 Mid-Hoosier Conference).

Bryant, Dyllan Rutledge and Zach Noel each had two hits in the win.

Waldron dropped to 5-16 (3-7 MHC).

North Decatur 16, Southwestern 6

The Chargers completed the two-game sweep of Southwestern after a 16-2 win Friday.

North Decatur improved to 6-11 this season and 6-3 in MHC contests.

Southwestern drops to 5-11 (3-8 MHC).

Softball

Morristown 11, Waldron 1

Rhylee Coppage allowed one hit over four innings to lead Morristown to the 11-1 victory. The Yellow Jackets improved to 9-7 (5-3 MHC).

Kayla Bair and Alexia Rogers each had two hits. Rogers drove in three runs.

Waldron fell to 3-10-1 (3-7 MHC).

Triton Central 1, Southport 0

Madison Collins drove in the game’s only run in the top of the fourth inning and Lillian Fillippinie pitched a three-hit shutout.

The win improved the Tigers to 15-4 this season. Southport dropped to 8-16.

Shelbyville 9, Madison 1

The Golden Bears trailed 1-0 going to the bottom of the fifth when they erupted for seven runs to seize control of the game.

Three different Shelbyville pitchers limited Madison (15-7) to three hits and one run. Cheyenne Eads struck out five Cubs in two innings of work. Hailey Pogue earned the win with three innings of work. Sydney Brown closed out the game with two scoreless innings.

Shelbyville scored six of its seven runs in the fifth inning with two outs. After Pogue reached on an error, Kylee Edwards, Addie Stieneker, Eads and Kali Laycock had hits with Edwards and Laycock driving in runs.

Stieneker added a two-run double in the sixth inning to set the final score.
