Despite entering the Mid-Hoosier Conference Girls Tennis Tournament without a No. 1 seed, Waldron advanced into all five championship matches Saturday – and won four of them.
Waldron’s Josee Larrison defeated Edinburgh’s Jessica Walsh, 6-4, 6-2 then topped the No. 1 seed Bella Kilps of Hauser, 6-4, 6-1 to become the champion at No. 1 singles.
Emerson Lindsey followed Larrison’s lead defeating Southwestern’s Aurora Belton, 6-0, 6-0, Hauser’s Charlie Clark, the No. 1 seed, 7-6, 6-3, and Morristown’s Abby Mendoza, 6-2, 6-1, to win the No. 2 singles bracket.
At No. 3 singles, Emily Tyree topped Southwestern’s Tori Burkhart (6-0, 6-0), Hauser’s Lydia Jordan, the No. 1 seed (6-3, 6-1), and Edinburgh’s Izzy Richardson (6-0, 6-0).
Waldron’s fourth bracket win came at No. 2 doubles where Grace Ross and Jackie Corlett defeated Edinburgh’s Mia Dodson and Lily Turner (6-2, 4-6, 10-7) and Hauser’s Abby Blair and Katy Miller (7-5, 6-2).
Waldron’s No. 1 doubles team of Audrey Hogg and Riley Price opened the bracket with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Hauser’s Mattie Foster and Addyson Barringer. That moved them into the championship match against the top seed – Southwestern’s McKinley Correll and Lauryn Blondell (photo).
The Spartans prevailed in a three-set match, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7.
With their performances, all seven Mohawks earned all-conference designation.
Mendoza also was named All-MHC as were Correll and Blondell with their win.
