Prep Report: Shelbyville eliminates Triton Central from girls tennis sectional

With a third win over Triton Central this season, Shelbyville ended the Tigers’ season and advanced to today’s semifinal round of the girls tennis sectional hosted by the Golden Bears.

In the only quarterfinal match of the sectional, Shelbyville won all five matches to secure a 5-0 victory over Triton Central.

At No. 1 singles, Emma Sandman defeated Maryrose Felling, 6-2, 6-3.

Renee Aldridge earned a No. 2 singles win over Hallie Schweitzer, 6-3, 6-1.

In the only match that went three sets, Ella Connolly bested Maddy Brown, 6-3, 2-6, 10-7.

At No. 1 doubles, Karlie Lawson and Sophia Asher defeated Courtney Washburn and Kaylynn Washburn, 6-2, 6-0.

And Rylie Lee and Sydney Baker collected a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lauren Grant and Audrey Canter at No. 2 doubles.

With the win, Shelbyville will face Southwestern today in one semifinal match. The other semifinal match pits Morristown and Waldron.

The sectional championship match is scheduled for Friday.

Baseball

Greenfield-Central 7, Shelbyville 1

At Greenfield-Central, Jaden Markus limited Shelbyville to four hits and struck out 10 to help the Cougars split the Hoosier Heritage Conference two-game series with Shelbyville (14-12, 6-8 HHC).

Greenfield-Central (13-9-2, 8-6 HHC) scored a run in the first off Shelbyville starting pitcher Gavyn Fisher and added five more in the third inning to pull away for the victory. Fisher allowed eight hits and three walks over three innings of work. Luke Brinkman pitched the final three innings and allowed one hit, three walks and one run.

A.J. Oden had two hits and two runs batted in for G-C. Grant Shepherd also had two doubles.

Shelbyville will close out its regular-season schedule Saturday at Jennings County (10-15).

Triton Central 14, Indianapolis Lutheran 13

At Lutheran, the visiting Tigers scored eight runs in the top of the first inning then held on for the Indiana Crossroads Conference victory.

Mathew Shircliff, Eli Sego, Cole Thomas and Avynn Whitaker each had two hits for Triton Central (13-11, 7-7 ICC). Whitaker had four RBIs. Shircliff, Thomas and Trevor Couch each drove in two runs.

Josiah King, Ryan Redding and Jackson Brandenburg each had two hits. Micah Mackay drove in four runs.

The Tigers scored three runs in the third and fourth innings to extend their lead to 14-5 but the Saints (13-11, 6-8 ICC) rallied with four runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth.

Triton Central hosts Class 2A, No. 3 Park Tudor (19-6) today in Fairland in a preview of the two teams’ sectional opener Wednesday at the Park Tudor Sectional.

Softball

Triton Central 12, North Decatur 0

At North Decatur, Lillian Fillippinie and Brooklyn Adkins delivered four hits and seven RBIs to lead the Tigers to their 16th win of the season.

Fillippinie tossed a five-inning one-hitter and had 12 strikeouts for Triton Central (16-5). The sophomore also had two hits and four RBIs.

North Decatur dropped to 12-14 this season.

The Tigers are home today to host Bethesda Christian (9-8) in their regular-season finale.
