Johnson Co. man charged with shooting family member

A 4th of July shooting injured a Johnson County woman and resulted in charges against a family member.

About 11:00 pm Sunday, Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies were advised of a medic run in the 500 block of Griffith Road in rural Clark Township on what was initially reported as an injury due to a firework. Once medics arrived, they quickly realized that the injury was actually a gunshot wound and requested deputies respond to investigate.

The medics immediately transported the injured woman from the scene prior to deputies’ arrival.

When deputies arrived, they spoke to the subject who had fired the handgun and observed that he was behaving irrationally. He claimed he had been firing warning shots at some trespassers and didn’t realize he had accidently struck the woman, who is a family member.

Other family members witnessed the event and confirmed that the subject who had fired the gun has been acting irrationally for several weeks. Once they realized he had shot his firearm, they took possession of it and turned it over to deputies.

The woman was in stable condition at the hospital and said she didn’t want criminal charges filed against the family member who fired the gun.

Levi C. Griffith, 21, resides in the immediate area where the incident took place. He was arrested for Criminal Recklessness w/ Deadly Weapon and has bonded out.

The investigation is still in progress for the Red Flag violation but all known firearms have already been seized.  The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will be consulted when all investigations are complete to determine if there are any further charges.
