Public Square center of discussion for latest Community Treasure Series event

Now that the Shelbyville downtown renovation project is complete, the Grover Center: Museum and Historical Society will host another public discussion on the value of “public spaces.”

On Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Strand Theatre, 215 S. Harrison St. in downtown Shelbyville, the Community Treasure Series will continue with a public discussion of the Shelbyville Public Square.

“At the root of it is what is a public space?” said Grover Center museum director Alex Krach, who will lead the discussion Wednesday.

Krach will talk about how public spaces came to exist and how Shelbyville’s Public Square has changed over the decades since its creation.

“I want people to tell us how (public spaces) have lived up to its concepts,” said Krach. “I really want to hear from the community and talk about how they have engaged with the Public Square.”

The Grover Center: Museum and Historical Society, 52 W. Broadway St., currently has a display dedicated to Shelbyville’s Public Square. Photos from the exhibit will be utilized in the discussion.

The Grover Center previously hosted a discussion on the Public Square while it was under construction but will bring more information to Wednesday’s event now that the renovation project is finished.

“It will be a different take than the first time,” said Krach. “There will be some overlap but it will be more eye opening on how we use public spaces.”

The event is free to the public. Interaction is encouraged during the discussion.

The event will be broadcast via the Strand Theatre’s Facebook page.
