Board of Works approves outdoor seating options for two businesses

The vision of the downtown Shelbyville redevelopment project was to create a modern, desirable gathering place.

At Tuesday morning’s Board of Works meeting, outdoor restaurant seating and a potential downtown concert event were discussed.

Earlier this year, the Redevelopment Commission granted money to Mainstreet Shelbyville to assist local businesses with the purchase of outdoor seating options. The city’s goal is to keep the seating options fairly consistent from business to business.

Two options for seating arrangements were approved Tuesday morning.

Spegal’s Prime Cuts, 48 Public Square, will have limited seating outside its butcher shop that will eventually include a commercial kitchen that will offer quick meal options.

Pudder’s, 18 Public Square, had its seating plan revision approved that includes state-required seating barriers because the establishment has a liquor license. The three-foot tall metal partitions will bear Pudder’s logo.

Plan director Adam Rude informed the three-member Board of Works that more businesses will be submitting outdoor seating plans in the coming weeks.

D.L. Sanders appeared before the board to discuss a desire to use the Public Square for an all-day concert event on Sept. 4.

The first band would perform at 11:30 a.m. in the downtown area while the last band would wrap up the event at 11:50 p.m.

Miscellaneous vendors will set up and food vendors will be available in addition to downtown eating establishments being open.

The Board of Works asked Sanders for a diagram of the general set up for the event before approving the concert request.

The all-day event would be free to the public on the Sunday before Labor Day.

The Board of Works consists of Shelbyville mayor Tom DeBaun, David Finkel and Bob Williams. The board meets at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday mornings at City Hall, 44 W. Washington St.
