Eva L. Spurling Butler, 88, Shelbyville

Eva L. Spurling Butler, 88, of Shelbyville passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at Ashford Place Health Campus in Shelbyville.

 

She was born August 15, 1930, in Campbellsville, Kentucky, the daughter of Onie Hunt and Sylvia (Newton) Hunt Smith. On December 21, 1946, she married Aften “Burr” Spurling, and he preceded her in death on August 5, 1989. Later she married Owen Kenneth Butler on August 17, 2002, and he preceded her in death on December 14, 2012.

 

Eva is survived by her children, Larry Spurling and wife, Sylvia, of Shelbyville, Linda Harmon and husband, Dennis, of Greensburg, Mary Kay Hallman and husband, Michael, of Redmond, Washington, and Stephen Butler and wife, Tamara, of St. Charles, Missouri; brother, William D. Smith and wife, Janet, of Cumberland; grandchildren, Kristin Parker, Alison Sabino and husband, Keith, Amanda Harmon and fiancé, Daniel Hobbs, Nathan Harmon and wife, Krista, Jordan Carmony and wife, LaTasha, Jennifer Hallman-Luhn and husband, Derek, Rebecca Hallman, and Timothy Butler; brother-in-law, Earl Spurling of Morristown; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was also preceded in death by her parents; her step-father who raised her, Dewey Smith; children, Lisa Marie Carmony and Charles Butler; and sisters, Ravenna Davis and Norma Cull.

Eva attended Arlington and Morristown High Schools.

 

She was a 65-year member of Lewis Creek Baptist Church, where she had formerly taught children’s Sunday school.

 

Eva retired from Cunningham Gardens, with 32 years of service.

 

She enjoyed playing euchre, country music and watching Indiana University basketball games.

Eva loved her family and enjoyed attending events in which they participated. She would always say “Now You Be Careful” to her children and grandchildren. Eva was very famous for her noodle making, and passed it on to her daughter-in-law and great-grandchildren.

 

Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at Lewis Creek Baptist Church, 1400 E 600 S, Waldron, Indiana.

 

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

 

Interment will be at Lewis Creek Cemetery in Shelby County.

 

Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 3500 DePauw Boulevard, Suite 1040, Indianapolis, Indiana 46268 or Lewis Creek Cemetery, in care of the funeral home.
