Randy D. (Rango) Tungate, 69, Shelbyville

Randy D. (Rango) Tungate, 69, of Shelbyville passed away Saturday April 20, 2019, at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield, Indiana.

 

He was born November 18, 1949, in Shelbyville, Indiana, the eldest son of Hurchel and Carol (Wiley) Tungate.

 

Randy married Teresa Havens on September 18, 1972 at the First Baptist Church of Shelbyville and she survives. Other survivors include his son Jason D. Tungate and wife Amy of Shelbyville; his daughters Juliana M. McQueen and husband Corbin of Franklin County IN; and Jessica R. Tungate of Shelbyville; sisters Lisa E.Tillision, husband Michael of Santee, SC; Anna L. Tungate of Shelbyville. He was preceded in death by both parents and his brother Dennis W. Tungate.

 

Mr. Tungate was a lifelong Shelbyville resident. He was a member of the B.S.A. achieving rank of Cub Scout to Explorer Scout. Upon graduation from Shelbyville High School he then entered the United States Air Force and was an Air Cargo Specialist serving in Viet Nam.

 

Upon separation from the military he attended Ivy Tech where he studied photography.

 

Mr. Tungate was employed by the Shelbyville Police Department as a dispatch operator and reserve patrolman. He also worked for the local radio station WSVL as a disc jockey on FM 97.1 as “Randy Tune”.

 

He was employed with the Federal Government at Naval Avionics Center in Indianapolis.

 

For a short period he, his wife and family owned and operated the Grapevine Café, a local Shelbyville eatery and boutique.

 

Mr. Tungate was a member of the Indiana Rifle Association, N.R.A., The Viet Nam Veterans, The American Legion and First Baptist Church of Shelbyville.

 

Randy had much joy with his life and with the world.  He loved his children, was proud of their lives and accomplishments. He was a gun enthusiast, enjoyed guitar, writing songs and poetry.

He shared appreciation for the arts with his wife, Teresa; herself an artist.

 

There will be no visitation.

 

Private family services will be observed. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

 

He has a niche in the columbarium located at Forest Hill Cemetery, Shelbyville.

 

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions should be made to the Shelby County Historical Society.
