William D. "Bill" Garrett, 93, Shelbyville

William D. "Bill" Garrett, 93, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2020

at Ashford Place Health Campus.

 

Born July 15, 1926 in Carrollton, Kentucky, he was the son of William H. Garrett and

Georgie Lee (Mills) Garrett.  On August 8, 1947 he married Reva L. (Baatz) and she

preceded him in death on May 20, 2017.

 

Survivors include 2 sons- Jerry R. "Jed" Garrett (wife Beth Ann) of Shelbyville, Stephen A.

Garrett (wife Linda) of Freedom, Indiana, daughter Sharon K. "Sherry" Staehler (husband

Joseph) of Shelbyville; 4 siblings- Sue Garrett Beverly of Bedford, Kentucky, Judy K. Garrett

Purkey of Harrisonville, Missouri, Alan Garrett (wife Debbie) of Madison, Indiana, Peggy Lee

Garrett Lutz of Madison; sister-in-law Ramona M. Miller of Bennington, Indiana, nephew Mike

 Hildebrand of Lindsey, Oklahoma, and several other nieces and nephews; 7 grandchildren- Lorie R. Staehler, Jeffrey D. Staehler, Jerry M. Garrett, Jon Garrett, Brian Garrett, Keith Garrett, Natalie

Barnard; 8 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.  He was preceded in death by 

his parents, his spouse, 6 siblings- Nancy Garrett Harmon, Evelyn Garrett Stewart, Paul Garrett,

 Julian Garrett, Kenny Garrett, and Nathan Garrett.  

 

Mr. Garrett had lived in this area for 70 years, after moving from Vevay, Indiana.

He owned and operated  Bill's Auto Sales for 31 years and retired

in 1991. Bill had attended Mt. Gilead Baptist Church and was a member of American

Legion Post #70, former member of Indiana Sheriff's Association and Eagles Lodge,

and was a US Army veteran, serving in the South Pacific during WWII.

 

Graveside services will be 11:00 am on Thursday, April 2, 2020 at Forest Hill Cemetery with Rev. Mike Keucher officiating.

 

There will be no visitation hours observed.

 

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

 

Bill opened the first used car lot and repair shop, Bill's Auto Sales, in Shelbyville in 1969. There

were new car lots selling used cars, but no used car lots only. His son Jerry "Jed" was his

partner until Bill retired. Bill enjoyed having barn sales and garage sales after retiring. He

loved fishing and hunting with his best friends Jed, Steve, and Mike from Oklahoma.

His favorite winter vacation spot was Ft. Myers, Florida, where he wintered with his wife

Reva for several years.
