Richard David Henderson, 89, of Shelbyville

Richard David Henderson, 89, of Shelbyville passed away Monday, November 30, 2020 at Ashford Place Health Campus in Shelbyville.

 

He was born March 14, 1931, in Indianapolis, the son of David and Ann (Pickerell) Henderson. On August 17, 1956, he married his wife of 63 years, Geneva Newton, and she preceded him in death on June 11, 2020.

 

Richard is survived by his children, Lisa Gaye Fortwengler and fiance’, Arthur Swanson, of Louisville, Kentucky, Bryan David Henderson and wife, Marci, of St. Paul, and Tamara Joy Mohr and husband, Jeffrey, of Waldron; grandchildren, Cody Mohr and wife, Kylee, David Mohr and wife, Jessica, Mason Henderson, Carson Henderson, Troy Fortwengler and Amy Cain; great-grandchildren, Hayden, Cooper, Brooklyn, Ryder, Kinsley and Madeline; and several nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to Geneva, Richard was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Cynthia Henderson; and brothers, Jack Henderson and Paul Henderson.

 

Richard was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church.

 

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict.

 

Richard retired from Western Electric in 1987, with 32 years of service.

 

He enjoyed gardening, bowling in leagues and woodworking. Richard was a collector of coins, old phones, stamps and ornaments.

 

He enjoyed the 2016 Indy Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C., with his son.

 

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, December 4, 2020 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

 

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Pastor Nick Coulston officiating.

 

Interment will be at Norristown Cemetery in Shelby County.
