Doris Z. Chambers, 98, of New Castle, IN, passed away June 21, 2021, at Glen Oaks, Health Campus, New Castle, IN.
Doris was born February 15, 1923, in Flat Rock (Shelby County), IN, to Louie O. Chambers and Minnie E. Harrod Chambers.
At the age of 89, Doris moved to New Castle from Shelbyville, IN, to be near her brother. She resided at Raintree Square Independent Living and in December of 2016, she moved to Glen Oaks Health Campus where she lived until her death.
A 1941 graduate of Shelbyville High School, Doris began her career working for the Indiana State Welfare Department from 1941 to 1957. From 1957 until her retirement in 1989, she was the administrative assistant to the Medical Directors of Larue D. Carter Hospital, Indianapolis, IN.
Interested in genealogy, Doris traveled the United States researching her family’s history, dating back to the early 1600’s. She was a member of the Shelby County Genealogy Society, Bartholomew County Genealogy Society, Johnson County Genealogy Society and the Indiana Historical Society. She had been a member of the West Street Methodist Church.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Pierre Chambers. Survivors include her brother, Donald Chambers (Arlene); nieces, Mary Chambers Porter, Shirley AR and Caren E. Chambers Krahulik (David), Indianapolis, IN; nephew, Peter Craig Chambers (Wendy), St. Louis, MO; great nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held at Resthaven Cemetery in Edinburgh, IN. Arrangements were entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes in Shelbyville, IN.
