Samuel O. Crane, 85, of Shelby County, passed away Saturday, July 2, 2022, at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born September 29, 1937, in Shelbyville, the son of Irvin Earl Nickels and Frances Evelyn Crane.  On May 24, 2001, he married Janice R. Comstock, and she survives.

In addition to Janice, Sam is survived by his daughter, Marie Knapp and husband, Steven, of Moscow Mills, Missouri; step-children, Leigh Ann Mills, Matt Comstock, Andrew Comstock, Aaron Comstock and Phillip Comstock; brother G. Thomas Nickels; two grandchildren, Samantha Marie Robinson and Michael Crane; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Sam was a 1955 graduate of Shelbyville High School.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Sam retired as a surveyor in 1997.

Gathering of friends will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

A Celebration of Sam’s life will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
