Cliff "Buddy" Land, 89, of Shelbyville

Cliff "Buddy" Land, 89, of Shelbyville, passed away unexpectedly Friday, July 29, 2022 at his residence.

 

Born February 23, 1933 in Flat Rock, Indiana, he was the son of Clifford and Julia (Warner) Land Treon.

 

Cliff was preceded in death by his parents, niece Cathy (Hendershot) Fish, nephew Den Hendershot, and brother-in-law Mac McDaniel. Cliff graduated from Flat Rock High School in 1952. He married Sharon (Calhoun) Basey in 1959 and she survives, they were married for 27 years. Cliff is also survived by their four beloved children; David Land, Amy (Land) Wilson; James Land (fiance Cathy Adkins Harmon); and Melissa (Land) Bostic. Cliff also leaves behind 9 grandchildren,11 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Cliff is also survived by 3 sisters: Barbara McDaniel  of Greenwood, Gail Hendershot of Nashville, Teri Treon of Columbus, and one brother, Charlie Land of Flat Rock, IN.

 

Following high school, Cliff joined the U.S. Navy and Indiana National Guard. He was aboard the USS BRIAREUS-AR-12. then moved to the USS ROSSDD563 Destroyer until 1956. The USS ROSS went on an around-the-world-cruise in 1954. He said he loved it and got to see the world. Prior to this, the USS Ross DD563 Destroyer had earned 5 battle stars in WW II. 

 

Following the Navy, Cliff worked at the Ford Motor Company. After retirement he obtained his real estate license.

 

He enjoyed many things over the years. He loved playing basketball and baseball, coaching youth baseball, trail riding on his horses and mules, motorcycle riding, traveling in his motorhome, working on cars and trucks, watching the Pacers and Colts and watching the series Survivor and old westerns. Cliff loved to mow his lawn as well as his neighbors.

 

Spending time with his friends, children and grandchildren was something he could never get enough of. He cared about loved ones more than himself. He was always there when anyone needed anything at all, and even if they didn't. He leaves behind his loving cat "Kitty" and many loved ones and dear friends. 

 

Cliff requested no funeral upon his passing.

 

A Celebration of Life will be held at Flat Rock Christian Church, 2700 W. Pope St, Flat Rock, IN, on Saturday, August 13, 2022  from 1:00 pm until  4:00 pm.

 

Military rites will be observed at 3:00pm at the church. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery.
