Daniel Robert Calkins, 68, of Lexington, Kentucky

Daniel Robert Calkins, 68, of Lexington, Kentucky, left a big hole in the hearts of his family and friends when he departed for his heavenly home on Thursday, March 23, 2023.

Dan was born on February 25, 1955 to Robert and Joan Calkins in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in Shelbyville, Indiana and Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana with degrees in Math and Spanish. Dan met Joni J. Hull at Franklin College, and then surprised many close to him by not becoming a Catholic priest. Instead, he married Joni on December 20, 1980 and raised three children: Jay (Amy) Calkins of Lexington, Natalie (Nick) Schuler of Lexington, and Danielle (J.K.) Keach of Columbus, Indiana. Those offspring gave them five grandchildren: Theodora Calkins, Colton and Rhett Schuler, Kessler and Lucy Keach.

Dan spent a long and rewarding career with Harcourt Industries, where his friendly demeanor turned hundreds of customers across the country into friends. He also developed extensive communities via tennis and his devotion to the Cathedral of Christ the King, including a deep affection for Christ Renews His Parish and The Serra Club along with the men involved in those endeavors.

Dan is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, his mother, and siblings, Terry (Julie) Calkins, Michelle (Ricky) Wren, Linda (Steve) Alspaugh, Kathleen (Tim) Simpson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 28th at Milward-Man O’ War, 1509 Trent Boulevard, Lexington, KY 40515.

The Funeral Mass will take place Wednesday, March 29th at 1:00 P.M. at the Cathedral of Christ the King, 299 Colony Boulevard, Lexington, KY.

Flowers are welcomed but memorial contributions to The Serra Club of Lexington Diocese at 356 Bradford Colony Dr., Lexington, KY 40515 or St. Joseph Catholic School at 127 East Broadway, Shelbyville, IN 46176 may be even better.
