Virgelia G. Ward, 83, of Shelbyville

Virgelia G. Ward, 83, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, May 14, 2023 at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born on January 7, 1940 in Charlottesville, Virginia, she was the daughter of James Turner and Gertrude (Price) Turner. She married Alcy Scott Ward on November 18, 1961 and he preceded her on June 30, 2018.

Survivors include 3 children- Gary "Bunny" Ward of Shelbyville, Michael Ward of Columbus, Ohio, Karen Turner Ward of Hampton, Virginia; 6 siblings- Lillian Holly of Charlottesville, Virginia, Carrolyn Haywood of Madison, Virginia, Carroll Turner of Decatur, Illinois, Frank Turner of Decatur, Illinois, Bessie Rollins of North Carolina, William Turner of Madison, Virginia; 5 grandchildren- Keri Hughes, Virgelia Jade Banks, Courtney Ward, Jordan Ward, Paige Ward; and 1 great grandchild- Zikhaia Ward. She was preceded in death by her parents, spouse and 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Mrs. Ward had lived in this area since 1983 after  moving from Virginia. Virgelia was a chef for several local restaurants for several years and also a Mary Kay consultant for several years. She graduated from Central High School in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1960, was a member of Moose Lodge #2118, a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Madison, Virginia and attended Big Flat Rock Christian Church here locally. Virgelia enjoyed traveling, cooking, gardening, animals, and listening to Gospel music.

Friends may call on Friday, May 19, 2023 from 4:00-8:00 pm at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road. Burial will be in Gordon Beasley Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Virginia.  Funeral services will be held at Antioch Baptist Church in Madison, Virginia.

Memorial contributions can be made to Shelby County Cancer Association, in care of the funeral home.
