John Cookendorfer

John Cookendorfer passed peacefully at his home in Shelbyville early Monday morning.

John was born and raised in West Harrison, Indiana where he also raised his own family.

He is preceded in death by his beloved father John Cookendorfer, and is survived by his treasured mother Mary Anne Cookendorfer, his sisters Peggy Bowling, Chris Newcomer, and Jackie Hutson. He is also survived by his sons John, Alex, & Austin Cookendorfer, and Aaron Zaenkert, several nieces and nephews, two grandchildren, and his best little furry friend Max, his dog.

John "Johnny" or "Cook", is also survived by his many friends both old and new, whom he cared for deeply and loved to playfully tease and joke with. He was one of the most loyal friends a person could ask for, and he added friends everywhere he went. He had an openess that didn't care what anybody thought about him. He was never putting on airs. He was himself no matter what. And that's probably why so many people were drawn to him. Everywhere he went, he'd easily find himself immersed in conversation with practically everyone. His non-judgemental attitude put everybody at ease.  But if you were lucky, and you entered his inner circle, you'd find yourself on the receiving end of the cunning wit and sharp tongue he was so famous for- followed by his signature giggle, when he really hit you with a zinger. He was often too smart for your own good.

John's friends and family were everything to him. He was a devoted father to his boys, a loving son to his mother and father, a caring brother to his sisters, and thoughtful Nunkie Nohn to his nieces and nephews. In his own way, he made sure everyone knew he would always love them.

An original computer whiz, John very much enjoyed the virtual company of his online gaming buddies.  And quickly making friends at Timber Creek Village, he became Resident Council President to a community that was becoming more important to him every day. But some of his fondest memories were of passing a peace pipe to his friends around a camp fire while listening to his favorite band, Ekoostik Hookah. His high times with good friends and good music were the nectar of his life.

A small memorial for his Shelbyville community will be held at Timber Creek Village on Saturday July 16th at 5:30p.m.

A celebration of John's life will be held at the V.F.W. Hall in Harrison, OH on July 30th from 2-6p.m.  All friends and family are welcome to join us for snacks and memories!

And next April, on 4/20 at 4:20p.m., there will be a party to celebrate Cook the one way he insisted everyone celebrate his life. Location and details to come.

Flowers may be sent to the V.F.W. Duwel Post 7570 at 9160 Lawrenceburg Rd, Harrison, OH. 45030.

Funeral Directors, Greg Parks, Sheila Parks, Stuart Parks, and Darin Schutt are honored to serve John’s family.
