Thomas E. Hargrove, 72, of Fairland

Thomas E. Hargrove, 72, of Fairland, passed away Friday, February 24, 2023

at AMG Specialty Hospital in Greenfield.

 

Born November 3, 1950 in Shelbyville, he was the son of Carl "Bud" Hargrove

and Mary (McDonald ) Hargrove.  He married Paula (Lockwood) Hargrove on

May 8, 1976, and she survives.

 

Other survivors include his father and strepmother Carl and Betty Hargrove of Vevay; 3 children- Thomas Hargrove (wife Jama) of Greenfield, Nicole Hargrove-Bergen (husband Virgil) of Camby, Cari Ann Hargrove of Fairland; 2 brothers- George Hargrove (wife Mitzi) of Melbourne, Florida, Ron Hargrove of Madison, Indiana; 1 granddaughter Madison; 6 step grandchildren, and 4 step great grandchildren. 

 

He was preceded in death by his mother Mary Cole, and a sister Cindy Branson.

 

Mr. Hargrove was a lifelong resident of this area and graduated from Triton Central High School in 1970.  He was employed at Farm Fans of Indianapolis for 31 years, and after their closing started working for Carrier Corp. for 2 years, until his health started to fail. 

 

Thomas enjoyed playing sports, cooking, attending flea markets, playing cards, travelling to Las Vegas, and spending time with his family.

 

Per Thomas' wishes, no funeral services will be observed.

Michael Morton Stacy, 70

Michael Morton Stacy, 70, entered peacefully into his final rest on Friday, February 17, 2023 at Franciscan Health Hospital in Indianapolis.  

 

Born January 5, 1953, Mike was the oldest child of O.M. Stacy and the late Tina S. Stacy of Fall Branch, Tennessee.

 

A US Navy veteran, Michael was also a member of American Legion Post #70 in Shelbyville, as well as a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He also served as Past Master of the Mount Airy #226 Masonic Lodge in Rural Retreat, Virginia.  He also had the highest honor available in the Boy Scouts of America as an Eagle Scout. 

 

Mike was employed and retired from General Shale Brick Corporation, after many years of service.

 

Mike was an avid Indianapolis Colts fan and enjoyed many years of attending games and adding to  his Colts room collection.  He also loved the Indianapolis Indians, Cincinnati Reds, IndyCar, NASCAR, and Formula One racing.  

 

Michael is survived by his father O.M. Stacy of Kingsport, Tennessee; son Shane Stacy of Plainfield, Illinois; brother Greg Stacy (wife Kathy) of Fall Branch, Tennessee; sister Carmela Peterson of  Jonesborough, Tennessee; as well as many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. 

 

Preceeding him in death was his mother, his wife Theresa B. Stacy, and his second wife Pam Stacy.

 

Mike also held in very high regard numerous faithful friends, both in Indiana and Tennessee.  Special thanks are extended to sister-in-law Esther Eaton and her husband Gary for loyal support and friendship for many years, and especially during recent days.  

 

A Celebration of Life will be held at 6:00 pm on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, Shelbyville, Indiana, with visitation there from 4:00 pm until the time  of the service.

 

Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion. 

 

Burial will be in Logan's Chapel Cemetery in Fall Branch, TN.

 

Memorial services will also be held in Fall Branch TN., at Hamlett Dobson Funeral Home.

Randy "Haha"  McGaha, 59, of Shelbyville

Randy “Haha”  McGaha, 59, of Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at his residence.

  He was born July 23, 1963 in Columbia KY to Billy Joe McGaha and Margie (Harmon) Lengl.

  Randy had a love for automobiles.  Whether it was body work or general mechanic work, he just enjoyed working on them.  He also had a love for flea markets and enjoyed collecting various items.  He was a good friend to many and will be missed by his family and friends.

Randy is survived by his mother, sister, Beverly Gilaspy (husband, Greg); brother, Tim McGaha (wife Bee), brother, Keith McGaha; nephew, Kristopher; step-daughter, Sara Patton; grand-daughters, Jasmine and Dakota; very close and dear friends, the Baird family and Ricky Williams; several aunts and uncles.

  He was preceded in death by his father and daughter, Jennifer Diefender.

  A Gathering of Friends will be Wednesday, February 22, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison Street, Shelbyville, IN 46176.

Betty Lou Combs, 84, of St. Paul

Betty Lou Combs, 84, of St. Paul, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2023, at her home.


She was born  September 7, 1938, in Huntington, West Virginia, the daughter of Roy and Goldie Myrtle (Williams) Allen.  On March 19, 1955, she married Ted Combs, and he preceded her in death on December 11, 2004.


Betty is survived by her daughters, Valerie Freeman and husband, Paul, of Waldron, Regina DeMasi and husband, Mark, of Indianapolis, and Sherry Ramp and husband, Jim, of St. Paul; son, Toby Combs of St. Paul; brothers, Ed Allen and wife, Trish, of Lavalette, West Virginia, and Jack Allen and wife, Diane, of Huntington; grandchildren, Alicia, Ryan, Ben, Tim, Tiffany, Erinn, Neal, Rachel, Logan, Megan, Tyler and Trevor; great-grandchildren, Naomi, Addy, Harlym, Violet, Jude, Benjamin, Emma, Caden, Noah, Lily, Ilya and Hudson; and numerous nieces and nephews.


In addition to Ted, Betty was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Willie LeMaster, Elmer LeMaster, Russel LeMaster, James LeMaster, Roy Allen Jr. and Jerry Allen; sister, Chloe Blake (husband, Gailor); and sons-in-law, Bill Solada and Dennis Rhoades.


Betty was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church.


She formerly worked as a factory inspector for STI in Greensburg, and a production operator at Shelbyville's Standard Register.


Betty enjoyed caring for her flower gardens, crocheting, singing, boating and camping.

 

Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were captivated by her many stories and adventures of Yugo.

 

She spoiled many a guest and family member with her cooking.  Some of her specialties were her homemade fudge, chicken and dumplings, dressing and her famous biscuits and gravy. 


She cherished her family and loved spending time with them.

 

John Denver's song about her birthplace, "Country Roads", filled her soul.  As a result, a trip to honor her life there, with family and friends, is planned for the Spring.

Carolyn Merrick, 71, of New Palestine

Carolyn Merrick, 71, of New Palestine, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at AMG Specialty Hospital in Greenfield.

She was born November 8, 1951, in Whitesburg, Kentucky, the daughter of Willie and Doris (Eldridge) Caudill.

Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Gale Merrick of Connersville; sisters, Beth Shirels and husband, Tracy, of New Palestine, Irene Hobbs and husband, Charlie, of Westport, Lori Stephens and husband, Jim, of Shelbyville, and Teresa Caudill of Nashville, Tennessee; brothers, Darrell Caudill and wife, Diana, of St. Paul, and Jim Caudill and wife, Dee, of Knightstown; granddaughters, Kelsey Fox, Kaylee Fox and Lailey Hines; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dale Merrick; and sister, Debbie McFarland.

Carolyn formerly worked at Continental Kitchen, retiring with over 10 years of service.

She loved spending time with her family, especially her children and granddaughters.

Katherine Elaine Berkshire, 59, of Avon

Katherine Elaine Berkshire, 59, of Avon, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2023, at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

She was born March 24, 1963, at Madison General Hospital on Fort Louis Army Base in Tacoma, Washington, the daughter of Francis Alan and Jeanette Elaine (Hardt) Berkshire.

Katherine is survived by her parents; and brother Michael Berkshire of Chicago, Illinois.

She graduated in 1981 from Caston High School in Fulton County.  Katherine received an associates degree from Indiana University in nursing.

Katherine was a registered nurse for over 20 years, working at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis and Avon, for the last 10 years, a job she loved.

She was a member of Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Avon.

Katherine enjoyed crocheting, traveling and reading.

Family was very important to Katherine and she enjoyed the time they spent together.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to Noon, Friday, February 24,  2023, at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 9201 ECR 100 N, Avon, Indiana.

Funeral services will be at Noon at the church.

Billy Gene Carlton, 68, of Gwynneville

Billy Gene Carlton, 68, of Gwynneville, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2023, at his home.

He was born September 23, 1954, in Shelbyville, the son of Raymond and Gretchen (Hatfield) Carlton.

Billy is survived by his son, Aaron Carlton and wife, Stacie, of Gwynneville; daughter, Amanda “Mandy” Carlton-Land of Gwynneville; brothers, Gary Carlton and wife, Elaine, of Greenfield, and Tom Carlton and wife, Diane, of Rushville; grandchildren, Mathew, Brooklyn, Greyson and Madilyn; sisters-in-law, Jerald Carlton of St. Paul, Debbie Carlton of Rushville, and Sheila Carlton of Russell Springs, Kentucky; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Donald Carlton, David Carlton and Fred Carlton.

He attended Gwynneville Christian Church.

Billy formerly worked in manufacturing at Randall Textron, with over 15 years of service.

He enjoyed riding around with his grandchildren in the golf cart.

Billy was known as a regular at the Bluebird Restaurant for his 6 a.m. breakfast. He always sat in the booth by the front window.

A Gathering of Friends will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Frazier Chapel, 124 E. North St. in Morristown.

The Celebration of Billy’s life will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with Pastor Ted Hagel officiating.

Inurnment will be at Arlington East Hill Cemetery in Rush County at a later date.

Juli Renee Roberts, 49, of Shelbyville

Juli Renee Roberts, 49, of Shelbyville, formerly of Lady Lake, Florida, passed away Monday, February 20, 2023, at Waldron Health and Rehab in Waldron.

She was born August 27, 1973, in Fairfield, Ohio, the daughter of David Roberts and Dona (Schoelch) Hensley.

Juli is survived by her mother and step-father, Richard, of Shelbyville; son, Tray Matthews and companion, Liza Lyman, of Hamilton, Ohio; sisters, Jodi Roberts, Deanna Hensley, and Jennifer Jones and husband, Matt, all of Shelbyville, Tangody Fewell and husband, Kris, of Waldron, and Melissa Koller and husband, Steve, of Belleview, Florida; grandchildren, Zeke and Milo; and nieces and nephews, Paige, Shelby, Jake, Mollie, Connor, Olivia and Christopher.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Juli graduated in 1991 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

She attended Saint Joseph Catholic Church.

Juli owned and operated VIP Hair Salon in Lady Lake, Florida.  She had been a beautician for over 30 years.

She loved animals, particularly Great Danes, Boxers and Boston Terriers.  Juli was also preceded by her dogs, Jynx, Jada, Holly and Lelee.

Juli was very full of life and had an infectious laugh. She enjoyed listening to music and dancing.

Brandy Danielle WIlson, 46, of Shelbyville

Brandy Danielle WIlson, 46, of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at her residence.

 

Born May 13, 1976 in Shelbyville, she was the daughter of Donald Wilson and Laura

(Fuquay) Wilson.

 

Survivors include her mother and father of Shelbyville; partner Kevin of Shelbyville; 2 sons- Nicholas Girdler of Denver, Colorado, Christopher Wechsler of Shelbyville; a brother-Jedediah Wilson (wife Emily) of Camby; and she is also survived by her dog, Precious.

 

She was preceded in death by her daughter Laura Lynne Wilson.

 

Mrs. Wilson was a lifelong resident of this area, and graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1996.  She had been a certified  nurses assistant with Seasons Hospice for several years, and also  provided home health care through Major Home Care for several years.  

 

Brandy enjoyed crocheting, collecting snow globes, and spending time with her family and friends.

 

Funeral services will be 12:00 noon on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at Glenn E. George and Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, with Chaplin Charlie Sawyer officiating. 

 

Friends may call on Wednesday morning from 10:00 am until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Cody Lee Veerkamp, 33, of Greenfield

Cody Lee Veerkamp, 33, of Greenfield, passed away Monday, February 13, 2023 at his residence.

 

He was born June 2, 1989 in Beech Grove IN to Jerry Veerkamp and Janice (Bird) Veerkamp.

 

Cody graduated from Shelbyville High School in 2008.  He was a Network Reliability Engineer.

 

Cody was a board member and major volunteer for the Strand Theater in Shelbyville.  He had a love for the outdoors and he enjoyed the times he was able to be out camping.  Cody was very intelligent and excelled at anything to do with technology.  His family was very important to him and he loved the times spent together.

 

Cody is survived by his parents, sister, Erin Workman (husband, Corey); aunt, Jean Armstrong (husband, Andy), aunt, Debbie Moorhead (husband, Randy), aunt, Joyce Bird; his loving dog and loyal companion Cooper.

 

He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Jim and Pat Bird; paternal grandparents, John and Mary Veerkamp; uncles, Mike and Dennis Bird.

 

A Rosary will be recited at Murphy-Parks Funeral Services on Saturday, February 18th at 10:30 a.m.

 

Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 18th at the funeral home.

 

Funeral services will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Murphy-Parks with Father Mike Keucher officiating.

 

Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Gregory A. (Greg) Faulconer, 72, of Shelbyville

Gregory A. (Greg) Faulconer, 72, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2023 at his residence.

 

He was born August 8, 1950 in Shelbyville to Paul Faulconer and Delores Faye (Harrell ) Diewart.

 

Greg graduated from Triton High School.

 

He served in the Army and was in Vietnam 3 times.

 

Greg worked in the construction field.

 

Greg is survived by his sister, Elaine Fair of Shelbyville; brother, Garry Faulconer of Florida; several nieces and nephews; especially Tommy Phelps, Seymour, IN.

 

He was preceded in death by sister, Janet Phelps; brother-in-law, Dale Fair.

 

No visitation or service will be observed.

Preston J. Batta, 88, of Mt. Comfort

In his own words: Preston J. Batta, 88, of Mt. Comfort, was born in Pocahontas, Arkansas on February 13, 1935 to Johnie A. and Pherne (Million) Batta.

 

He “crawled out on the roof” February 13, 2023.

 

He was a 1952 alumnus of Arsenal Technical High School.

 

He served in the Naval Reserve from 1952 to 1960 with active duty 1955 and 1956. He was sent to radar school and spent most of his time viewing the east coast on a radar scope. He owned and operated Batta Service Company 30 years, retiring in 2000. He enjoyed beer; traveling to many countries and states, including annual Hawaiian vacations for many years; and being a gentleman farmer in retirement.

 

He loved his family and having them all together, especially at Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July. We would usually get together once a week. He was a member of Moose Lodge 17, a 50 year member of F & AM, and Murat Shrine.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, listed above; first wife JoAnn (Silvey); and brother Larry W. Batta. He is survived by his wife, Valerie J. Wender; sons David of Indianapolis, Joseph (Pamela) of Greenfield, and daughter Christina (Jack) Ziebarth of Austin, Minnesota; five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. In his later years he was ordained a minister and had the honor of performing the marriage ceremony of grandson Mark to Whitney.

 

Those who remember him, please raise a glass and wish him well on his journey to the other side of the rainbow. No tears, just memories. I love you all.

Kathy Gahimer, 70, of Shelbyville

Kathy Gahimer, 70, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2023, at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

She was born December 14, 1952, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Pearl L. and Althena (Barnes) Mounce.  On August 15, 1971, she married her loving and devoted husband of 51 years, Norm T. Gahimer, and he survives.

In addition to Norm, Kathy is survived by her daughter, Wendy Strickland and husband, Aaron, of Columbus; granddaughters, Stephanie Grace Strickland and Evelyn Rose Strickland; sisters, Dee Sieg and husband, Mike, and Gail Jackson, both of Shelbyville, and Sue Beeker and husband, Darin, of Rochester; father of Somerset, Kentucky; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Phil and Doretta Gahimer of Manilla, Jerry and Kim Gahimer, and Karen and Garrick Williams, all of Shelbyville; close friends and extended family, Dean and Karen Beckner and Jerry and Vicky Strickland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kathy was preceded in death by her daughter, Stephanie Gahimer; mother; brothers, Charles Mounce and Wendell Ray Mounce; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Norman K. and Rosemary Gahimer; brothers-in-law, Kenny Gahimer and Jeff Gahimer.

She graduated in 1971 from Shelbyville High School.

Kathy faithfully attended Grace Wesleyan Church.

She formerly worked at Linne’s Bakery and the Cancer Association of Shelby County, until retiring in 2018.

Kathy was a kind, loving and thoughtful wife, mother, grandmother and friend.  She loved to spend time with her precious granddaughters, whom she adored.

She enjoyed sewing and collecting Longaberger and Vera Bradley items. Kathy also enjoyed vacationing in Florida and the Smoky’s with family and friends.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 16, 2023, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, February 17, 2023, at Grace Wesleyan Church, 56 E. Franklin St. in Shelbyville. The family is requesting mask be worn in the building.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, at the church, with Pastor Jose Riveria officiating.

Interment will be at Miller Cemetery in Shelby County.

Cleo Ann Shadley, 85, of Shelbyville

Cleo Ann Shadley, 85, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2023

at Timber Creek Village.

 

Born January 21, 1938 in Milton, Indiana, she was the daughter of Ellsworth and

Cordella Cecil.  She married Harry Shadley, Jr. on December 30, 1955 and he

preceded her on October 21, 2005.

 

Survivors include a son Darrin Shadley (wife Amy) of Waldron; a brother Larry

Cecil (wife Sue) of Waldron; 2 grandchildren- Molly Workman and Devan Pogue;

and 7 great grandchildren.  She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, and 11 brothers and sisters.

 

Mrs. Shadley was a lifelong resident of this area.  She had worked for many years as

a supervisor for Bosma Industries for the Blind, in Indianapolis.

 

Ann enjoyed watching football, NASCAR, and IU basketball.  She loved her family

and especially adored her great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be  1:00 pm on Friday, February 17, 2023 at Glenn E. George

& Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Rd. with Pastor Robb Barlow officiating.  Burial will

be in Miller Cemetery.  Friends may call on Friday morning from 11:00 am until the

time of the service.

Olena L. Carter, 87, of Shelbyville

Olena L. Carter, 87, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Morristown Manor.

She was born March 4, 1935, in Russel County, KY. To Omra Polston and Flora (Hogue) Polston.

Olena was a homemaker.  She was a caretaker at heart and loved to cook for her family. It was always important to her that her family was cared for.  In her free time, she enjoyed crocheting.

Olena and Harvey E. Carter married on June 20, 1956 and they enjoyed 63 years together before he preceded her in death on June 26, 2019.  Olena and her late husband were both longtime members of the Baptist Temple in Shelbyville.

She is survived by her daughter, Theresa (husband, David) Martin of Ft. Wayne; daughter, Penny (husband, Carl) Boggs of St. Paul; son, Paul D. Carter of Shelbyville; grandson, Jonathan (wife, Teri) Martin; granddaughter, Adrienne Raber (husband, Josh); great-grandson, Briggs Martin, great-granddaughter, Rory Martin, grandson, Ben (wife, Lisa) Boggs; great-granddaughter, Zoey Boggs; grandson, Brandon Boggs; grandson, Kyle (wife, Hannah) Carter; granddaughter, Paige (husband, Richard) Jones, her brothers, Ralph Polston, and Phil Polston, and her sister, Barbara Absher-Harbin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harvey, her brothers, Ted Polston and Frank Polson, and her sister, Norma Bowers.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday, February 5, 2023 at Murphy-Parks Funeral Services, 703 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville, IN.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, February 6, 2023 at the funeral home with Pastor David Martin officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Kylie Marie Sebastian, 31, of Indianapolis

Kylie Marie Sebastian, 31, of Indianapolis, passed away Friday, February 3, 2023, in Indianapolis.

She was born February 14, 1991, in Greensburg, the daughter of Evelyn (Hudnall) White.

Kylie is survived by her mother and step-father, David White, of Hamilton, Ohio; sons, Landon Addison and Braden “Brady” Addison, both of Avon; brother, Ryan Sebastian of Oxford, Ohio; sister, Stephanie Sebastian of Fairfield, Ohio; grandmother, Betty Hudnall of Shelbyville; niece, Phoebe Sebastian; and nephew, Avery Sebastian.

She formerly worked in food service.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, February 10, 2023, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St., in Shelbyville.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Whispering Hope in Shelby County.

David Leon Thacker, 75, of Shelbyville

David Leon Thacker, 75, of Shelbyville, passed away, Friday, February 3, 2023, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

He was born February 4, 1947, in Indianapolis, the son of Ralph and Norma Henrietta (Gainey) Thacker. 

David is survived by his wife and caregiver, Karol Evans of Shelbyville; sons, Sean Scott Thacker and significant other, Allison Kurtz, of Noblesville, and Jesse Aaron Thacker of Beech Grove; daughter, Savannah Marie Dzelme of Beech Grove; brother, Jack J. Thacker and wife, Kathie, of Venice, Florida; and grandchildren, Eddy Eugene Dzelme, Jameson Scott Dzelme and Lottie Jean Dzelme.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

David graduated in 1965 from Southport High School.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972.

David retired from Eli Lilly & Co. in environmental monitoring, with 30 years of service.

He enjoyed researching different topics on his computer.

Carolyn Sue Scott, 83, of Shelbyville

Carolyn Sue Scott, 83, of Shelbyville, passed away, Saturday, February 4, 2023, at her home.

She was born July 1, 1939, in Vevay, the daughter of Ivan and Doris (Turner) Allen.  On February 21, 1960, she married Larry Dwain Scott, and he preceded her in death on November 17, 2010.

Carolyn is survived by her sons, Mark A. Scott and wife, Laura, of Shelbyville, and Jonathan “J.D.” Scott and wife, Alecia, of Indianapolis; daughter, Gina Kuhn and husband, Eric, of Milroy; sister, Vickie Coy of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Lindsey and husband, Zach, Kelly, Katie, Blayre, Collin, Devon and wife, Kortnie, Kylee and Ryan; great-grandchildren, Carter, William, Vera, Henry and Ruby; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of very dear friends.

In addition to Larry, Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, David Allen and Jack Stonebraker; and sister, Tammy Moore.

Carolyn graduated in 1957 from Shelbyville High School and attended Butler University.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Shelbyville, where she was a prayer warrior on the prayer chain.

Carolyn was a homemaker and was known by her children as “the best mother in the world.”   She had a great love for her family, and cherished the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was also a member of The Fun Bunch, Saint Joe’s Social Club and the Lucky 13 Home Economics Club.

Carolyn enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles and watching Hallmark movies. 

She was an avid fan of the Indiana Pacers, Indiana University basketball and the Cincinnati Reds.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 9, 2023, at the funeral home. Carolyn’s niece, Rev. Kristi Jones will officiate, she will be assisted by Rev. Beth Crouch.

Interment will be at Second Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Johnson County.

Arthur "Art" Merle Shuler II, age 78, of Greenfield

Arthur “Art” Merle Shuler II, age 78, of Greenfield, passed away January 28, 2023 at Springhurst Healthcare Center.

 

He was born August 4, 1944 in Wallace, Indiana to the late Arthur M. and Virginia (Thompson) Shuler. He was married to Catherine Louise (Schindler) Shuler in 1969, and she survives.

 

Arthur was a graduate of Columbus High School and had a long career in finance. A veteran of the United States Navy, he was assigned to the destroyer USS Picking and served two tours in Vietnam, from 1963 to 1967. Arthur retired after a long career with the U.S. government as a DFAS Contract Specialist. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing; and he enjoyed playing any kind of card games.

 

In addition to his wife, Arthur is survived by his two children, Lisa (Darryl) Wineinger and Stuart (Stephanie) Shuler; and grandchildren, Megan and Kristen Wineinger, and Tripp and Raelynn Shuler.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents, listed above; and his brother, Stuart Michael Shuler.

Nancy Wooten, of Greenfield, 69

Nancy Wooten, of Greenfield, 69, passed away on Sunday, January 29. Born in Greenfield, the second daughter to Lowell & Marthalou (Bennett) Wooten,

 

A 1972 Graduate of Greenfield-Central High School, Nancy attended Friends University in Wichita, Kansas. She worked for Indiana Insurance company for several years as an adjuster before becoming an agent for a local insurance company in Greenfield. Later she managed senior apartment facilities.

 

Nancy always had a heart for service. She taught Sunday school, served in leadership roles at Greenfield Friends Church, and was a member of the local Delta Theta Tau sorority chapter for many years. Nancy served on several boards and committees throughout her life in service to the community.

 

 

But her heart and focus were always on her family. She enjoyed spending time with her sisters and brothers, and nieces. She was an avid participant in our Sunday night family card game and dinner. These often cutthroat games spanned generations but always ended in huge amounts of laughter and more smiles than hard feelings. In the past few years, Nancy had become the central point of information about life events for our dozens of extended cousins, keeping us all connected.

 

 

Nancy is preceded in death by her parents and brother John Wooten. 

 

Sisters Naomi Lyman and LouAnn Shelton Miller, brother Ty Wooten and three nieces, Hope Greathouse, Sophia Lyman, and Hannah Rawson, a great-niece and two great-nephews, and dozens of cousins survive her.

 

Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 West Main Street, with the Funeral Service immediately following at the funeral home.

 

Private burial will take place in Philadelphia Cemetery.

Madrue E. (Taylor) Grinstead, 95, Greenfield

Madrue E. (Taylor) Grinstead, 95, Greenfield, passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. She was born on October 17, 1927, in Russellville, Alabama, to Walter and Annie (Smith) Taylor.

 

Madrue was very involved in her church, Greenfield Church of Christ. Additionally, she loved spending quality time with her daughters and grandchildren, whether that be playing card games or baking cookies. She had a green-thumb and enjoyed crafts.

 

She is survived by her loving daughters: Cheryl (Larry W.) Arnold, Jeanne (Joel) Justiss, and Janice (Steve) Appleby; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Madrue was preceded in death by her parents; first husband and father of her children, John W. Dobbins; second husband, Ralph Grinstead; sons: John Dobbins, Lloyd Dobbins, and Michael Dobbins; grandson, Benjamin Justiss; sisters: Mildred Dobbins and Eunice Zolner; and step-children: Everett Grinstead, Marvin Grinstead, Marian Miller, Faye Guinn, and Kay Pennington.

 

Visitation will be on Friday, February 3, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 West Main Street, Greenfield, with the service immediately following at the funeral home.

Karen Alexander, 80, of Shelbyville

Karen Alexander, 80, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2023 at her residence.

She was born April 23, 1942, in Shelbyville, to Russell Morrison and Vera Maxine (King) Morrison.

Karen was a homemaker and loved cooking, and taking care of her family, especially her grandkids.    She also enjoyed bird watching.

Karen married Dwain Alexander on June 17, 1961 and he survives.  She is also survived by her daughter, Michele (husband, Craig) Callahan of Indianapolis, her sons, Curtis Alexander, and Brendan Alexander (companion, Lori Stiers), all of Shelbyville, 9 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, her brother, John Tressler, of Fairland, her sisters, Anita Nauert, Sarah Stoops, and Candace Morrison.

She is preceded in death by her half-sister,  Nedra Johnson, her half-brother, Gayle Morrison, her step-brothers, Ron Tressler and Jack Tressler, her half-brother, Joel Tressler, and her half-sister, Mary Hollingshead.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Knights of Columbus on Saturday  February 25, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Martin James Scott, "Candy Man"

Martin James Scott, “Candy Man”, born February 28, 1963, was received into the arms of Jesus in the early morning hours of January 30, 2023, following a lengthy battle with lung cancer.   

 

The oldest of 4 siblings, born in Deming, New Mexico to Rodney H Scott and Carol J Greater. 

 

Upon his parent’s death, at approximately age 7, Martin and his siblings were raised by the Ohio Soldiers & Sailors Home in Xenia, Ohio.  He attended the Wayne High School of Huber Heights, OH completing the 11th grade and then received his GED one month later in April of 1982.

 

Private Martin Scott served under honorable conditions in the United States Army as a Communications Specialist at Fort Lewis, Washington.  While in the Army he was awarded an Army Service Ribbon and the Sharpshooter Qualifications Badge. 

 

Martin was an avid sports fan.  He loved hockey, specifically, the San Jose Sharks and the Cincinnati Cyclones.  In football, he loved the Seahawks.  GO HAWKS!   He also enjoyed playing golf.

 

Animals loved Martin.  He’s trained squirrels and cats to stay out of the road, and had a special way with dogs.  His cats French Fry, Ginger and B-Bop proceed him in death.

 

Martin was employed by The Salvation Army from 2008-2013 and later returned as a volunteer early 2020.  He will be greatly missed by the team!  Donations may be made in his honor to The Salvation Army of Shelbyville, Indiana, and mailed to 136 E Washington Street

 

A memorial with military rites will be held at The Salvation Army on Wednesday, February 15, at 10 AM.

Roger McGriff

Roger McGriff completed his journey of life in this world and passed on to eternity January 28, 2023.         

 

He was born January 26, 1938 in Plymouth, Indiana to Mary and Lester McGriff.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Betty of 48 years.  Their blended family consisting of Brenda Wiley (deceased) , Larry Watler (Carol), Cindy Halbert (Tim), Ron McGriff (Diana), Danny Watler (DeDe), Mike McGriff and Carol Bockelman.  Additional 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchilden and one great great grandchild.

 

Roger was a teacher for 40 years at Shelbyville Jr. High School and an Indiana High School Athletic Association Official for 53 years working baseball, softball, basketball, football, volleyball and track. 

 

Two highlights of his officiating career were working with Brenda in volleyball and Ron and Mike in basketball.  Roger treasured time with his wife and family.  Roger & Betty were able to visit all 50 states and several countries.

 

A private funeral is planned by Murphy-Parks Funeral Services.

B. Joann "Jo" Durbin Ragsdale, 83, of Shelbyville

B. Joann "Jo" Durbin Ragsdale, 83, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2023 at Heritage House.

Born November 30, 1939 in Shelby County, she was the daughter of William Durbin and Bertha (Stickford) Durbin.   She married Phillip Ragsdale on September 22, 1962, and he preceded her on June 10, 2001.

Survivors include 3 children- Brad Ragsdale (wife Donna) of Shelbyville, 2 daughters- Brenda "Bre" Newton of Shelbyville, Barbara "Barbie" Wayman of Greenwood; a sister Janice Spheger (husband Kent) of Noblesville; 2 brothers- Dale Durbin (wife Rosalie) of Homer, Harold Durbin of Rush County; 5 grandchildren- Samantha Miller, Jessica Cawthon, Jason Ragsdale, Christopher
Wayman, Sara Wasson; and 2 great grandchildren- Alexis Jo Miller, and Connie Elizabeth Miller.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, 2 brothers- Willard and Fred Durbin, and a sister Katherine Comstock.

Mrs. Ragsdale was a lifelong resident of this area, and graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1957.  She had been employed in several Shelby County government offices, including dispatcher
for the Shelby County Sheriff's Department and the Clerk's office for several years, as well as serving as Addison Township Accessor from 1999-2002.  She was a member of First Christian Church, Shelbyville Order of Eastern Star, a charter member of Optimist Club of Shelby County, a life member of Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority, serving as National Chapter's President in 1998.

Joann enjoyed sewing, baking, making candy, (she was well  known for her peanut brittle), and gardening.  She loved being with family and friends and working on the computer.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, with Pastor Beth Crouch officiating.  Burial will  be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday morning from 11:00 am until the time of the service.

Theodore C. "Ted" Dora, 90, of Shelbyville

Theodore C. "Ted" Dora, 90, of Shelbyville, passed away shortly after sunrise on Saturday, January 28, 2023, on his birthday, with his family by his bedside.

Born January 28, 1933 in Greenfield, he was the son of Dewey E. Dora and Hazel D. (Smith) Dora.  He married Ruth (McDaniel) Dora on May 19, 1956 and she preceded him on March 4, 2001.

Survivors include a son Rex Dora (wife Suzanne) of Hope,  daughter Kala Paxton of Shelbyville, adopted daughter Carol Taylor of Waldron; sister Bonnie Capshaw (husband Randy) of Indianapolis; 
several nieces and nephews; 9 grandchildren- Brittany Thomas, Teah Jacobs, Noah Britt, Bailey Britt, Bobbie Hughett, Tina Gray, Charlie Petro, Nathan Slack, and Tawnee Mellentine, whose special bond helped care for and support Ted in the last years of his life.  He is also survived by 7 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his spouse, daughter Pennie Sue Dora, 2 sons Mark Dora and Michael Dora, granddaughter Mia Dora, 3 brothers- Jimmy, Dewey, & Phillip Dora, 2 sisters- Loretta Spencer, and Lucille Cropper.

Mr. Dora had lived in this  area for most of his lifetime, and had been in maintenance at KCL Corp., retiring after 40 years of service.  He then became a driver/carpenter for the Amish Community for 15 years. He was a long time member of Shelbyville Kingdom Hall, where he enjoyed Bible Studies, and spreading the Word of God. Ted enjoyed working on cars and engines, gardening, raising Angelfish, studying his Bible, and tinkering around his garage with anything and everything, including his home made foundry.  Even as Ted's health began to decline, he always had a smile on his face, and a kind word for everyone.  He never met a stranger and was always willing to help a less fortunate person.

Funeral services will be 1:00 pm on Friday, February 3, 2023 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, with burial in Bennett Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday morning from 11:00 am until the time of the service.

Joshua D. Church, 44, of Indianapolis

Joshua D. Church, 44, of Indianapolis, passed away Monday, January 30, 2023 at his residence.

Born November 9, 1978 in Indianapolis, he was the son of Mark Church and Ruth (Baugh) Church.  He married Kimberly (Lewis) Church on August 23, 2021, and she survives.

Other survivors include 3 children- Zebadiah Church, Jacob Church, Cassandra Church; 3 step children- Michael Dover, Brandon Dover, Ronnie Redden; 2 brothers-Mark Church, Brodi Church; a sister Marci Church; mother-in-law Deb Engle, father-in-law Robin (Jill) Lewis and he is also survived by several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Church was a lifelong resident of this area, and graduated from Arlington High School in 1997.  He was employed as a millwright with Underwood Industrial  Contractors of Indianapolis for several years.  He was a member of One Body Ministries in Indianapolis. Joshua was known for his bear hugs and  his sense of humor. He was the Rock of his family, and would give the shirt off his back to anyone, if needed.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at One Body Ministries, 3132 Carson Avenue, Indianapolis, with Pastor Chris Dunn officiating. Friends may call on Saturday morning, at the church, from 12:00 noon until the time of the service.

Dovie J. Carpenter, 88, of Shelbyville

Dovie J. Carpenter, 88, of Shelbyville, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2023, at her home.

She was born September 1, 1934, in Franklin County, the daughter of Wiley Haze and Janie Gladys (Carey) Priddy.  On July 21, 1956, she married Charles F. Carpenter, and he preceded her in death on May 7, 2003.

Dovie is survived by her sons, Mike Carpenter and wife, Debbie, of Shelbyville, and Bruce Carpenter and wife, Vivian, of Monticello, Illinois; daughters, Carol Grant and husband, Michael, of Shelbyville, and Janet Harvey and husband, Ray, of Waldron; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to Charles, Dovie was preceded in death by her sons, Mark Lloyd Carpenter and Ronald Ray Carpenter; brothers, William Priddy and Charles Priddy; and sisters, Della McPherson and Mary McFarland.

Dovie graduated in 1952 from Laurel High School.

She formerly owned and operated Dovie’s Log Cabin in Laurel, from 1993 until retiring in 2003.

Dovie was an excellent quilter.  She began quilting at the age of 9 years old, with the scraps from her mother’s projects.  Dovie went on to make quilts for all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for various events in their lives, such as newborns, graduations and weddings.  She also sold some of her quilts and kept a log of whom they were sold to and where they went.

She also enjoyed gardening, canning and crocheting.

Dovie loved her family, she especially enjoyed being a grandmother.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, February 2, 2023, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, February 2, 2023, at the funeral home, with Rev. Michael Coyle officiating.

Interment will be at Winchester Cemetery in Shelby County.

Tom F. McAdams, 81

Tom F. McAdams, 81, passed away after a lengthy illness Tuesday, January 31 at his cherished rural Morristown home with his loving wife by his side.

 

Tom was born July 16th, 1941 in Troy, Ohio, the fourth son of Verlynne I. McAdams and Flora Lee (Stowe) McAdams. He lived in Tipp City, Ohio before moving to Shelbyville to join KCL Corporation in 1973. 

 

He was a devoted and loving husband of 44 years to Carol S. (Pierson) McAdams.  The couple was married June 18, 1978 at the First Christian Church in Shelbyville by the Rev. James Horner. 

 

Tom is survived by his beloved wife Carol, daughters Aleka McAdams formerly of Morristown, Melea McAdams (husband Jake McAdams) of Valparaiso, grandchildren Asher McAdams, Quinn McAdams, Abram McAdams, and Jameson McAdams of Valparaiso, sister-in-law Alberta McAdams of Greenville, OH, nephews Tim McAdams, Chicago, IL, Kevin McAdams and Lee McAdams of Ohio, nieces Pamela McAdams-Belgar and Malinda Tipton, also of Ohio.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Larry McAdams, Ronald McAdams, and Gary McAdams, and father-in-law and mother-in-law Clyde and Lucy Pierson who dearly loved him.

 

Tom was a 1959 graduate of Tippecanoe High School, Tipp City, OH and the Dayton Barber College, Dayton, OH where he was a professional barber before attending college at McPherson College of the Brethren, McPherson KS.  There he barbered many of his school buddies while completing his BS in Business Administration in 1967.  He also received his Real Estate License later in life.

 

Upon his college graduation, Tom worked for esteemed NCR Dayton as a Computer Programmer Analyst where he was a team member who designed and implemented NCR software for Sears and JC Penny companies.  He moved to Shelbyville in 1973 to serve in positions of Programmer Analyst and Information Systems Manager for KCL Corporation for 25 years.  Prior to retirement, he specialized in Y2K software conversions for Asset Management Systems in Greenwood, IN.

 

Singing was a favorite pastime of Tom’s.  He was a member of the former Blue River Singers where he met his wife Carol.  He valued multiple opportunities to perform with Community Choirs, various A Cappella and Barbershop Groups, as well as guest invitations to feature sing at multiple churches.  As he was spiritually dedicated to his Brethren upbringing, he was also a long time member of the First Christian Church of Shelbyville, where he was a devoted member of the church choir.  His lovely tenor voice, quiet personality, gentle heart, dry humor, and warm smile were memorable to nearly everyone he met. 

 

Additionally, he and his family were active with International Adoptive Families of America and OURS of Indiana. Tom was a dedicated father to his daughters.  He enjoyed traveling, working on home projects, working out at the gym, was an avid reader, and was especially happy just to live a simple life of spending time at home. 

 

A Special Remembrance will be held at Shelbyville First Christian Church, Saturday, February 4th at 11:00am, with the Reverands Beth Crouch, Andy Wade and Arlene Whitfield.  Friends may gather one-half hour prior to the service in the church sanctuary. A Lunch Gathering for Friends and Family will follow immediately after the service in the church’s Fellowship Hall.  Graveside services will then proceed to Concord Cemetery in northern Shelby County.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church of Shelbyville, and the choice of research programs for the treatment and cure of Parkinson’s Disease.

Deborah Sue Denison, 67, of Shelbyville

Deborah Sue Denison, 67, of Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at her home.

She was born April 10, 1955, in Alpena, Michigan, the daughter of Charles Hodgins and Ruth (Elliott) Wilder.

Deborah is survived by her mother of Shelbyville; sons, Buddy Lockridge, James Dixon and Eric Clifton, all of Shelbyville; daughters, Jenny Gonzalez and husband, Humberto, and Shoshanna Garcia, both of Shelbyville, and Marilyn Nicole Christiansen of South Bend; brothers, Danny Hodgins and Matthew Wilder, both of Shelbyville; sisters, Joyce Knight, Elizabeth Williams, Patricia Hodgins and  Gloria Goode, all of Shelbyville; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father; brothers, Charles Hodgins and Gregg Hodgins; and sisters, Robin Nigh Short and Karen Corley.

Deborah formerly worked at Old Hickory Furniture for over ten years.

She loved spending time with her family.

Deborah enjoyed working crossword puzzles, playing computer games and sewing.

Teresa A. "Terry" Ramsey, 61, of Shelbyville

Teresa A. “Terry” Ramsey, 61, of Shelbyville, passed away, Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at MHP Medical Center in Shelbyville.

She was born July 28, 1961, in Indianapolis, the daughter of James and Carolyn (Pacely) Westfall.  On March 29, 1986, she married her husband of 36 years, Joseph T. “Todd” Ramsey, and he survives.

In addition to Todd, Terry is survived by her son, Andy Ramsey and wife, LeAnne, of Edinburgh; daughter, Anna Ramsey and significant other, Cory Brand, of Shelbyville; sisters, Darla Groeninger and husband, Bud, of Evansville, and Tonya Philpott and husband, Eddie, of Greenwood; grandchildren, Maddilynn, Hunter, Jethro, Beau, Huxley, Olivia, Frankie, Corbyn, Max and Koda; brother-in-law, Gerald Redenbaugh; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Terry was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Debbie Redenbaugh and Francie White; and brother, Billy Craig.

She was a member of Cornerstone Church in Trafalgar.

Terry was formerly a home health aide with Advantage in Whiteland.

She enjoyed her gardening and bird watching.

Terry loved organizing family gatherings. She also loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She also leaves behind her little dog, Mazie.

Graveside rites will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 4, 2023, at Miller Cemetery in Shelby County.

A Gathering of Family and Friends will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, February 5, 2023, at Cornerstone Church, 1000 W 375 S in Trafalgar.
