Major changes for area schools as IHSAA unveils new sectional assignments

The IHSAA Executive Committee approved the sectional assignments in six team sports for the next two school years.  Some significant changes are coming for area schools in football and basketball.

The oddest change likely involves Triton Central basketball.  Most schools will have an identical, or at least similar, sectional field for boys and girls basketball.  The TC girls will have a sectional field much the same as in recent years with Eastern Hancock, Indianapolis Howe and Irvington in Sectional 42.  Scecina will replace Shenandoah.

Meanwhile, Triton Central boys basketball features an entirely new field.  The TC boys will play in a five-team field with Milan, North Decatur, South Decatur and South Ripley in Sectional 44.

The Eastern Hancock boys will be in an eight-team field 2A Sectional 41 with Cambridge City Lincoln, Centerville, Hagerstown, Knightstown, Northeastern, Shenandoah and Union County.

Shelbyville basketball will shift its postseason attention from the south with East Central, Bloomington, and Columbus schools to the west.  For the next two years Golden Bear girls and boys basketball will play in 4A Sectional 13 with Center Grove, Franklin, Franklin Central, Greenwood and Whiteland.

New Palestine, Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central girls / boys basketball will share a 4A Sectional 9 field with Anderson, Richmond, Pendleton Heights and Muncie Central.  Muncie Central replaces Connersville who drops to 3A.

Shelby County’s 1A basketball schools, Morristown, Southwestern, and Waldron, will continue to compete in Sectional 60 with Hauser, Jac-Cen-Del, Oldenburg and Rising Sun.

In football, 5A state champion New Palestine is in a four-team 5A sectional field with Seymour, Franklin and Whiteland.  Former sectional opponents include Zionsville (up to 6A), Anderson (shifted to another 5A sectional) and Greenfield-Central.

Greenfield-Central returns to 4A from 5A classification.  The Cougars will join Mt. Vernon and Shelbyville in Sectional 21 with Connersville, Muncie Central, New Castle, Pendleton Heights and Richmond.

Triton Central and Eastern Hancock will no longer share a football sectional.  TC shifts to the south in 2A Sectional 39 with Clarksville, Eastern (Pekin), Mitchell, Paoli, Providence, Switzerland County and Union County.  The Royals will join 2A Sectional 38 with Centerville, Shenandoah, Heritage Christian, Indianapolis Howe, Scecina, Northeastern and Winchester.
