Police looking for impersonator that assaulted a Shelbyville man

On May 16th, 2019 at 3:46 am the Shelbyville Police Department was dispatched to the area of 800 block of South Tompkins for an assault.  Officers arrived in the area and spoke with the victim.

The victim received a call from the suspect.  The suspect advised he/she was a police officer and the victim was advised he needed to address an issue concerning his property.  The victim got dressed and when he left his residence, he was assaulted.  The victim has been assaulted in the past and we are working to see if there is a connection to these incidents.

The suspect was able to get away with items he/she took from the victim.  At this time this is still an ongoing investigation.  We ask anyone with any information on this incident to please contact the Shelbyville Police Department Detective Division.

We encourage anyone who feels they may be receiving a call from someone who portrays themselves as an officer, and you feel it may be a hoax, to hang up and then call the agency back.  We feel it is better to take a couple of extra minutes to confirm this information and help prevent yourself from becoming the victim of a crime.
