Shelbyville wrestling working to improve with postseason looming

In a world where athletics remain day to day with the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic, Shelbyville High School wrestling coach Adam Miller wants to make sure his team makes the most of every opportunity.

The Golden Bears managed to do just that at the HHC Tournament Saturday at New Castle as a mix of youthfulness and experience paved the way for Shelbyville.

At 106, Isaiah Havens placed fourth, while Dillon Berry placed sixth at 120. Tarik Runnebohm brought home sixth place honors at 132, Cael Lux finished sixth at 138, Ryan Bradley finished sixth at 195, and Elias Jones finished sixth at 285.

Chayce Collier managed second place honors at 152, falling to Zach Hoyt, of New Palestine, by fall.

Taige Mummert also brought home second place honors at 182, falling to Greenfield-Central's Scott Stanley by fall.

The Golden Bears finished eighth with 80 points.

Recently, Shelbyville won the Rushville Invite, knocking off Shenandoah 48-27 and Rushville 58-18.

Miller told Giant FM the season has gone "pretty well" considering how young the team is.

"Guys who have had a good season so far are Jed Tillison, Chayce Collier, Taige Mummert and Dillon Berry who was out at the beginning of the season.  These guys are all seniors and any of them could do well in the postseason," Miller said.

Shelbyville's coach admits the season has been crazy due to Covid-19.

"It's been weird not shaking opponents hands, because if you wrestle your pretty much family. All we can do is pray and hope our kids don't have to sit out at Sectionals because of Covid.  But, we have just adapted to the changes and kept grinding. The goal for the season is to finish strong and stay healthy," Miller told Giant FM.
