Golden Bears take down another state-ranked opponent

Class 4A, No. 7-ranked Shelbyville continues to toughen up in preparation for the upcoming postseason.

On Monday the Golden Bears hosted 4A No. 17 Franklin, which features one of the state's top pitchers.

Izzy Harrison, a University of Kentucky recruit, kept Shelbyville in check for five innings and carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth.

The Golden Bears scratched together two runs to take the lead for the first time then closed the door on the Grizzly Cubs in the top of the seventh for a 2-1 victory that pushed their record to 19-2 this season.

Cheyenne Eads earned the win with an 11-strikeout performance. Franklin managed just four hits off the Shelbyville freshman.

Harrison, who plays travel ball with Shelbyville catcher Addisenn Weaver and is a future college teammate with Karissa Hamilton, also allowed just four hits while striking out 14.

Trailing 1-0, Shelbyville rallied behind run-scoring hits from Eads and Kylee McIver.

The Golden Bears will continue to prep for the postseason today with a road trip to 4A No. 4 Roncalli.

New Palestine continues to be ranked No. 1 in the most recent state coaches poll. Mooresville, Lake Central, Roncalli and Crown Point round out the top five.

Bedford North Lawrence jumped ahead of Shelbyville this week at No. 6. The Golden Bears are followed by Center Grove, Franklin Central and Jasper.
