Southwestern sophomore jumps into track and field state finals

Southwestern sophomore Lilly Rooks will compete in the state finals long jump competition on June 5 at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis.

Rooks finished third in the regional long jump event Tuesday at Franklin High School to secure her first state finals appearance. The top three finishers in each event automatically advanced.

East Central senior Ellie Lengrich won the event with a best leap of 18 feet, 2.75 inches.

Warren Central freshman Laila Smith was runner-up at 18-1.75.

Rooks’ best leap of 17-3.25 just missed breaking Southwestern’s longest-standing program record of 17-4 set by Jeanne Gore in 1983.

Shelbyville senior Megan Eads finished fourth at 17-0.5, and will wait to see if she is added to the state finals field.

Rooks was the only Shelby County athlete to qualify for the Girls Track and Field State Championship Meet.

Triton Central senior Alyssa Lewis placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in a school record time of 48.18 seconds.

Southwestern senior Abby Muck finished seventh in the 100 (13.26) and 14th in the 200 (28.94).

Shelbyville junior Stefanie Howard placed 16th in the 1,600 (5:54.68).

Southwestern junior Alison Muck finished 16th in the 100 hurdles (22.18).

Morristown’s 3,200 relay team of Raegan Kleine, Rylee Kleine, Maggie Lutes and Aubrea Trattner placed 12th in 10:48.92.

Southwestern’s 400 relay team of Alison Muck, Rooks, Abby Muck and Riley Engel suffered a baton drop and did not finish the race.

In the high jump competition, Shelbyville senior Malea Terrell placed 12th (5-0) while Triton Central sophomore Maddy Brown did not clear her opening height.
