Becker stars in Waldron's county tourney semifinal win over Southwestern

Waldron’s success this season has come on the backs of Bryce Yarling and Lucas Mitchell.

On Friday in the first semifinal game of the 97th Annual Shelby County Boys Basketball Tournament, Bryant Becker did a lot of the heavy lifting for the Mohawks.

The senior scored 11 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and had seven assists to lead the Mohawks to a 60-47 victory over Southwestern. Waldron (6-4) will play for its first county tournament title in five years Saturday night against Triton Central (6-6).

Waldron has little depth on its roster and relies on Yarling and Mitchell, who combine for 37.4 ppg, to lead the team. On Friday, Becker was outstanding clearing the boards, scoring when he had opportunities and making the right passes to his teammates to put points on the scoreboard.

“This was awesome. We talked with him and told him when you are attacking and willing to shoot we are a different offense,” said Beau Scott. “It’s another element defenses have to account for.”

Scott also got production from starters Lucas Shaw (six points) and Caden Sheaffer (four points) to total 21 points from players not named Yarling, who finished with 18 points and three steals, and Mitchell, who was dominant in the first quarter and finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Hartsell led Southwestern (3-7) with 19 points but he only had five in the first half when the Spartans struggled to get going offensively.

“We were starting the offense 10 feet further back than we wanted to and we didn’t run much,” said Southwestern coach Brady Days. “In the second half we had to go to a spread out offense because we didn’t want to run anything. We had to run something simple because we weren’t doing any screening.”

Jordan Jones added 18 points in the loss.

Waldron led 14-6 after one quarter with Mitchell getting 10 points and three rebounds.

All five Waldron starters scored in the second quarter to extend the lead to 25-14.

Southwestern’s third quarter was its best quarter, shooting 55% from the field and getting as close as five points.

The Spartans cut a 39-32 lead after three quarters to 39-34 on a pair of Hartsell free throws to start the fourth quarter. A free throw from Grant Emerick got the lead back to five at 40-35 before a 7-0 run by Waldron sealed the win.
