Golden Bears fall behind early to Pirates and never recover in 61-54 loss

Class 3A, No. 15 Greensburg raced out to a 17-6 lead after one quarter Saturday night at Garrett Gymnasium and held off Shelbyville for a 61-54 victory.

The Pirates (9-3) extended the lead to 35-23 at halftime and the Golden Bears (2-8) never got closer than three points the rest of the way.

Ollie Sandman led Shelbyville with 27 points. Jakob Heaton added 15 in the Golden Bears’ first loss of 2022.

Greensburg won the junior varsity game, 48-22. The Golden Bears are 2-8.

Shelbyville travels to Columbus Tuesday to take on Columbus East (1-8). The Olympians have lost five straight.

The Golden Bears will host Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Pendleton Heights (2-9) Saturday at Garrett Gymnasium. Shelbyville will honor former Golden Bear athlete Gary Oldham Jr., who was killed in an automobile accident on Interstate 74 early Wednesday morning in Shelby County.

T-shirts will be sold with Gary’s name and soccer number (#19) on the back. All proceeds will go to the Oldham family.
