Prep Report: Strong second half leads Rushville to win at Shelbyville

Annika Marlow scored nine of her game-high 22 points in the third quarter Tuesday night at Garrett Gymnasium to propel Rushville to a 51-44 victory at Shelbyville.

The host Golden Bears built a 25-17 lead by halftime but made just one field goal in the third quarter which allowed the Lions (11-8) the lead which it held with a 12-of-18 performance from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Marlow became the 13th Rushville player to surpass 1,000 career points in the win. She also had four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Sophia Dora added 13 points and Briley Munchel had nine points, six assists, five steals and four rebounds.

 

 

Kylee Edwards led Shelbyville with 15 points. Ellie Simpson had nine.

Shelbyville won the junior varsity game, 27-21, to improve to 13-2 this season.

The Golden Bears (8-10, 3-2 Hoosier Heritage Conference) travel to Mt. Vernon (10-7, 2-1 HHC) Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff.

Girls basketball

New Palestine 54, Triton Central 44

At New Palestine, the host Dragons sank 18 of 22 free throws over the final five minutes, 30 seconds of the contest to deal the Class 2A, No. 7 Tigers their second consecutive loss.

The last time Triton Central lost back-to-back games came in late January of 2016.

Three Dragons (10-7) scored in double figures led by Isabella Gizzi’s 16 points. Rachel Kelley tied her career high with 15 points and Alaina Miller had 13.

 

 

Gizzi now has 990 career points and is poised to become the third Dragon to eclipse 1,000 career points in her career. Gizzi is coached by her mother, Sarah Gizzi – New Palestine’s career scoring leader at 1,172 points. Gizzi’s brother, Maximus, is the New Palestine boys basketball program career scoring leader at 1,612 points.

Brooklyn Bailey led Triton Central (15-4) with 14 points. Maddy Brown finished with 12.

Triton Central won the junior varsity game, 36-24.

The Tigers return to the court Tuesday at Covenant Christian (5-12).

Southwestern 53, Lutheran 28

At Southwestern, Lily Kerber scored a game-high 18 points to get the Spartans back to .500 at 8-8 this season.

Alison Muck had 12 points and McKinley Correll finished with seven.

Five different Spartans scored in the second quarter to create a 27-15 halftime advantage.

 

 

Kerber tallied eight of her 18 points in the third quarter when Southwestern opened up a 43-21 lead.

Bekah Caston led Lutheran (4-10) with 11 points.

Southwestern is at North Decatur (12-6) Thursday for a Mid-Hoosier Conference game.

North Decatur 41, Morristown 35

At Morristown, Danika Rutledge produced a double-double in the Yellow Jackets’ loss.

The freshman finished with a team-high 10 points and 11 rebounds and also had four steals and three blocked shots.

 

 

Raegan Kleine had nine points, six rebounds and four assists. Maggie Lutes also had nine points and five rebounds.

Morristown dropped to 9-8 this season with the loss.

Morristown’s scheduled game Saturday at Edinburgh has been postponed until Jan. 28. The Yellow Jackets will return to action Tuesday at Greenwood Christian (8-8).

Gymnastics

Roncalli 102.2, Martinsville 92.175, Morristown 80.525

At Roncalli, Morristown had just three competitors in the season opening meet due to illness and injury.

Oakleigh Goedde finished fifth in the floor exercise and sixth in the all-around competition.

 

 

Also competing Tuesday for Morristown were Allison Batten and Cheyenne Shrum.

Morristown is in action again Saturday at the Franklin Central Invitational.

Boys swimming

Pendleton Heights 95, Shelbyville 45

At Pendleton Heights, Michael Fox and Juan Gonzalez-Gallego each won two individual races for the Golden Bears.

Fox won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:12.94 and followed that up with a win in the 500 freestyle (6:07.51).

 

 

Gonzalez-Gallego took first place in the 200 individual medley (2:14.97) and the 100 butterfly (59.09).

Also for Shelbyville, Lance File was runner-up in the 50 freestyle (27.38) and 100 backstroke (1:17.72).

Shelbyville hosts Mt. Vernon Thursday.

Girls swimming

Pendleton Heights 136, Shelbyville 41

At Pendleton Heights, Karissa Hamilton led the Golden Bears with wins in the 50 freestyle (25.71) and 100 freestyle (58.24).

Also for Shelbyville, Miriam Garringer had a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle (6:07.91).

 

 

The Golden Bears closed out the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (4:11.11) with Hamilton, Garringer, Marlee Rice and Jordan Tobler.

Shelbyville hosts Mt. Vernon Thursday.
