Prep Report: Fast start propels Triton Central to win over Class A, No. 8 Lutheran

Triton Central got out of the gate fast Saturday night against Class A, No. 8 Indianapolis Lutheran and rolled to a 66-61 victory.

The Tigers scored 23 first-quarter points and extended their lead to 31-14 at halftime. The Saints hit 10 second-half three-pointers to cut into the lead but five different Triton Central players scored in the fourth quarter to secure the Indiana Crossroads Conference win.

 

 

Isaac Morgan finished with a team-high 17 points to lead Triton Central (8-7, 2-0 ICC). Caleb Miller and Josh Kemper each scored 13.

L.J. Ward topped Lutheran (10-3, 3-1 ICC) with 20 points. Mitchell Lee had four 3s in the second half and finished with 18 points.

Triton Central continues its ICC schedule Friday when it hosts Indianapolis Scecina (7-6, 0-1). The Tigers are at South Decatur (7-8) Saturday.

Boys basketball

Bethesda Christian 68, Waldron 45

At Bethesda Christian, the visiting Mohawks overcame a slow start to stay within range but the Class A, No. 14-ranked Patriots were too strong in the fourth quarter, outscoring Waldron 22-10.

Sam Mlagan led Bethesda Christian (9-2) with 21 points. Demonte Ferguson had 18 and Luke Stuckey made four 3s on the way to 14 points.

 

 

The Patriots led 24-6 after one quarter and 33-24 and 46-35 at the next two breaks.

Bryce Yarling led Waldron (8-6) with 21 points. Lucas Mitchell finished with 13.

Waldron hosts Southwestern (4-9) Friday and Rising Sun (6-7) Saturday.

Girls basketball

Shelbyville 55, Delta 17

At Shelbyville, the host Golden Bears closed out their Hoosier Heritage Conference schedule with a win over the Eagles (3-16, 0-6 HHC).

Shelbyville (10-11, 4-3 HHC) built a 15-5 advantage after one quarter and extended that to 33-9 at halftime.

 

 

Kylee Edwards led the Golden Bears with 18 points in the season finale at William L. Garrett Gymnasium.  Abby Brenner had 13 points and Ava Wilson finished with seven.

Abby Rouse led Delta with nine points.

Shelbyville closes out its regular season schedule Thursday at Hauser (10-10).

Yorktown 120, Shelbyville 48

Mt. Vernon 116, Shelbyville 52

At Mt. Vernon, the Golden Bears did not have an event win against a pair of HHC opponents but Tyler Harker and Juan Gonzalez-Gallego had runner-up performances.

Harker finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.34. He also finished third in the 500 freestyle (5:21.30).

 

 

Gonzalez-Gallego placed second in the 100 butterfly (58.60) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:16.11).

The duo teamed with Will Rife and Tristin Maloney to finish third in the 200 medley relay (1:54.70).

Shelbyville is at Indian Creek Thursday.

Girls swimming

Yorktown 104, Shelbyville 51

Mt. Vernon 100, Shelbyville 55

At Mt. Vernon, Karissa Hamilton and Miriam Garringer each scored individual wins for Shelbyville and formed half of a winning relay team,

Hamilton won the 50 freestyle in 25.49 and finished runner-up in the 100 freestyle (56.62).

 

 

Garringer won the 200 freestyle in 2:11.39 and was runner-up in the 500 freestyle (5:56.03).

Hamilton and Garringer teamed with Marlee Rice and Madison Monroe to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:49.83).

Rice also had third-place finishes in the 100 freestyle (59.58) and 50 freestyle (27.69).

Shelbyville is at Indian Creek Thursday.
