IHSAA approves track and field postseason venues, finds troubling trend in athlete ejections in boys soccer

The Indiana High School Athletic Association recently released the minutes from the Jan. 13 IHSAA Executive Committee meeting.

Within the minutes were approval of the track and field postseason events.

Athletes from Morristown, Shelbyville and Triton Central will compete in the New Palestine Girls Track and Field Sectional on May 17 along with Beech Grove, Christel House Academy, Franklin Central, Greenfield-Central, Lutheran, Scecina, New Palestine, Roncalli, Victory College Prep and Warren Central.

Athletes from Southwestern and Waldron will compete at the Franklin Sectional with Center Grove, Columbus East, Columbus North, Edinburgh, Franklin, Greenwood Christian, Greenwood, Hauser, Indian Creek and Whiteland.

The girls regional for both sectionals will be at Franklin High School on May 24.

The state championship meet will return to the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington on June 3.

Morristown, Shelbyville and Triton Central will send boys track and field participants to the Greenfield-Central Sectional on May 19. The schools in the G-C Sectional are the same as the New Palestine girls sectional.

Southwestern and Waldron athletes will travel to the Columbus North Sectional.

Greenfield-Central also will serve as the boys regional site on May 26 for both the G-C Sectional and Columbus North Sectional.

The state finals will be held June 4 at Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex at Indiana University.

In other news:

  • A proposal from the Softball Coaches Association of Indiana (SCAI) was approved 18-0. The proposal asked for six-team sectional brackets to be set up the same as basketball and volleyball sectionals where the team receiving a bye playing teams that advanced from round one.
  • A list of 506 basketball officials that applied for this year’s Girls Basketball State Tournament Series was presented. The series will require six officials per sectional for a total of 384 individuals.
  • A total of 584 officials applied to work this year’s Boys Basketball State Tournament Series. The tournament requires 384 individuals.
  • A list of 154 wrestling officials was presented to work the Wrestling State Tournament Series. A total of 128 officials are needed at the sectional level.
  • A total of 60 applicants applied to officiate the 2022 swimming and diving state tournaments.
  • When discussing unsporting behavior for the time period between Aug. 1, 2021, and Jan. 7, 2022, a troubling trend in boys soccer was identified.

A total of 131 athletes were ejected in boys soccer contests in that time period. Football was second with 107 athlete ejections. Girls soccer followed with 23 ejections, ahead of boys basketball (16), girls basketball (11), wrestling (10) and volleyball, which had no athletes ejected.

The IHSAA will address the statistics with the state coaches association as well as the Sportsmanship Task Force. In addition, five schools with poor sportsmanship scores will be appearing before the Executive Committee this summer to discuss plans for improvement. The schools were not identified.
