Prep Report: Morristown softball debuts with win over Liberty Christian

Morristown softball opened its season with a seven-run first inning but still had work to do to secure the victory.

The Yellow Jackets added runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings to hold off Liberty Christian, 12-10, Monday in Morristown.

Ten different Yellow Jackets had at least one hit in the win.

Kristen Whitney went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Alexia Rogers also went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Both had inside-the-park home runs.

Whitney earned the win in the circle, throwing five innings, allowing three hits and seven walks while striking out eight.

Rhylee Moran pitched two innings, allowing five hits and four walks while striking out two.

Anna Blower led Liberty Christian (1-1) with a three-hit performance.

Maddie Mercer (1-1) took the loss after allowing 11 hits and 12 runs.

The Yellow Jackets travel to Christel House today for a 5:30 p.m. game.

Baseball

Rising Sun 9, Waldron 0

At Waldron, Johnathan Jimenez and Brady Works combined to throw a six-inning no-hitter against the Mohawks (1-2).

Jimenez worked into the sixth inning without allowing a hit but walked three. The senior notched 11 strikeouts.

Works secured the final out of the game to get the Shiners (1-2) their first win of the season.

Jimenez also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs.

Peyton Merica and Damon Carrigan also went 2-for-3 in the win.

Eli Sheppard took the loss for Waldron. He allowed two hits and five runs in the start. Jacob Bennett worked the final four innings, allowing six hits and four runs (all unearned).

Waldron travels to Oldenburg Academy today.

 

 

Union County 13, Southwestern 5

At Union County, the host Patriots (3-1) scored five runs in the second and fifth innings to defeat the Spartans in their season opener.

Mason Stewart collected the win for Union County, working four innings, allowing two hits and three runs (all unearned). Kyle Sams and Eric Burdine combined for three innings on the mound and allowed just two runs.

John Ridenour and Mason Stewart each had two hits for Union County. Ridenour and Burdine each had two RBIs.

Southwestern hosts Mid-Hoosier Conference rival South Decatur (2-1) on Thursday.

 

 

Tri 6, Morristown 1

At Tri, Mason Wilson and Sam Mondrush combined to limit the visiting Yellow Jackets to three hits and one run in the season opener for both programs.

The two junior hurlers combined for 10 strikeouts.

Nick Jones and Kyler Engle each had two hits for Tri.

Morristown (0-1) is at North Decatur (1-1) Thursday.

 

 

Girls Tennis

Lutheran 4, Southwestern 1

At Lutheran, the No. 1 doubles pairing of Kyla Robertson and Brooklyn Schneider produced the only match win for Southwestern in its season opener.

Robertson and Schneider defeated Malin Bullock and Rachel Bolton, 6-4, 6-2.

Southwestern’s No. 2 doubles pairing of McKinley Correll and Faith Kelley were defeated in three sets by Cece Awry and Dani Taylor, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 13-11.

The Saints swept the singles matches in straight sets.

At No. 1 singles, Catherine Erwin topped Lauryn Blondell, 6-0, 6-1.

Ella Weigand defeated Ella Rice at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4.

And Katie Roe bested McKinze Belton at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

The Spartans return to action Wednesday at Knightstown.
