Morristown girls, TC boys capture county track and field championships

Triton Central used its speed. Morristown leaned on its distance runners. Both plans worked out perfectly at the Shelby County Track and Field Meet Tuesday at Southwestern High School.

Brayden Wilkins and Ethan Cales each won two events, Brad Schultz added more first-place points and the Tigers captured both the 400-meter relay and the 1,600 relay to secure the Shelby County boys track and field championship with 75 points.

Morristown finished runner-up with 55 points. Southwestern was third (54) and Waldron was fourth (38).

Wilkins won the 200 meters in 23.02 seconds with Schultz just .07 behind for second.

Wilkins also won the long jump with a best attempt of 18 feet, 10.75 inches. Fellow Tiger Anthony Dunville was runner-up.

Cales won both hurdling events – taking first in the 110 hurdles in 16.52 and first in the 300 hurdles in 44.19.

Schultz captured first-place points in the 100 with a time of 11.45. Dunville finished third.

“Speed is the strength of our team,” said first-year Triton Central head coach Tim Able. “We are blessed with some fast kids.”

Schultz, Wilkins and Dunville teamed with Ray Crawford to win the 400 relay in 45.17.

Schultz and Wilkins also won the 1,600 relay with Jace Stuckey and Brady Hackworth in 3:46.2.

And the Tigers got second- and third-place points from Hadyn Ball, Jared Schweitzer and William Baugh in the discus and shot put events.

“The game plan was for our throwers, long jumpers and sprinters to get high (finishes),” said Able. “We had to do that.”

Morristown got event wins from Cade Mahin (2:15.92 in 400), Jacob Batten (2:15.92 in 800) and Tyler Schonfeld (5-2 in high jump).

Waldron’s Will Larrison won both the 1,600 (5:01.69) and 3,200 (11:30.72). Braylon Williams won the shot put competition with a throw of 44-7.5.

Southwestern’s Jonah DeArmitt took first place in the discus (114-1). Dane Kissell, Ryan Griffin, Koty Claiborne and Carter Snepp won the 3,200 relay in 9:09.72.

Morristown (photo) clinched the girls championship with a win in the meet’s final event – the 1,600 relay. The Yellow Jackets’ quartet of Gracie Laster, Raegan Kleine, Emma Wiggins and Maggie Lutes crossed the finish line in 4:42.81 to set their team total at 70 points.

That left Southwestern as the runner-up (62). Triton Central was third (49), finishing ahead of Waldron (45).

For Morristown, Kleine won the 1,600 in 6:01.73 while Grace McLaughlin captured the win in the 3,200 in 14:34.58. McLaughlin also finished third in the 1,600.

Kindall Dorsey grabbed the win in the discus with a top throw of 83-7.

The Yellow Jackets also won the 3,200 relay with Kleine, Laster, Lutes and Eva Champigneulle in 13:04.13.

Southwestern’s Alison Muck won two individual events – the 100 hurdles in 16.43 and the 200 in 27.75.

Muck also was part of Southwestern’s winning 400 relay team (54.28) with Emma Estes, Mikayla Claiborne and Lilly Rooks.

Rooks won the long jump at 16-1.5.

Triton Central’s Madison Brown won the 100 (13.7), the 400 (1:06.05) and the high jump (5-0).

Waldron’s event wins came from Lillian Lozier (54.22 in 300 hurdles), Hadlie Ross (2:40 in 800) and Madalyn Hudnall (30-11.75 in shot put).
