Prep Report: Shelbyville softball stays in HHC title contention with win over Marauders

Class 4A, No. 9 Shelbyville kept itself in title contention in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 3-0 victory over Mt. Vernon Tuesday in Shelbyville.

Karissa Hamilton had two hits and scored two of Shelbyville’s three runs.

Brooke Lipperd had two hits, including a double. Hailey Pogue drove in two of Shelbyville’s three runs.

Cheyenne Eads improved to 7-3 for Shelbyville (12-4, 4-1 HHC) with a complete-game performance. The sophomore allowed just two hits and walked four while striking out 14.

Mt. Vernon dropped to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in HHC contests.

The Golden Bears are at 3A No. 9 Danville (11-3) Thursday. The Warriors will be the eighth state-ranked team Shelbyville has faced this season.

Baseball

Yorktown 20, Shelbyville 11

At Barnett Field in Shelbyville, the Hoosier Heritage Conference game featured 29 hits and 31 runs but the Tigers were able to end Shelbyville’s 6-game win streak.

Yorktown (13-5, 7-4 HHC) scored five times in the second inning, six times in the third and tacked on seven more runs over the final two innings to secure the win.

Hayden Carrow went 5-for-6 with eight runs batted in to lead Yorktown. Cole Temple had three hits, scored three runs and drove in four while Jackson Furnish and Jacob Crim combined for six more RBIs.

Landon Eppard improved to 2-0 on the mound this season. He pitched four innings, allowed four hits and four runs while striking out six.

Luke Brinkman (1-1) took the loss for Shelbyville (10-6, 4-5 HHC).

Asher Balting led the offensive attack with three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Charlie Rife and Logan Prickett each had two RBIs.

Brock Kuhn, Caden Tackett and Dalton Jones each had two hits.

The two teams meet again today in Yorktown.

 

 

North Decatur 12, Waldron 1

At Waldron, the visiting Chargers scored seven runs in the fifth inning to break open a 5-1 game and secure the MHC victory.

North Decatur improved to 6-7 this season and 4-3 against MHC opponents.

Waldron dropped to 4-12 (0-7 MHC).

Jacob Bennett’s RBI-double in the fourth inning scored Eli Sheppard with Waldron’s only run.

The second game of the MHC two-game series is Thursday at North Decatur.

 

 

South Decatur 9, Morristown 8

At Morristown, the visiting Cougars scored seven runs in the fifth inning to escape with the MHC victory.

Avery Seegers had three hits and two RBIs to lead South Decatur (14-2, 7-0 MHC). Colby Rathburn, Cameron Henderson and Devin Pate each had two hits.

Evan Wullenweber earned the win on the mound. He allowed five hits and struck out four in five innings.

Morristown built an 8-2 lead after four innings with hits from Dyllan Rutledge, Sam McDaniel and Lucas Ellis.

The two teams return to the diamond Thursday at South Decatur.

 

 

Boys Golf

Southwestern 188, Waldron 245

At Timbergate Golf Course, the host Spartans posted a season-best score to defeat the Mohawks.

Hunter Pappano and Tristan Pappano shared the medalist honor with identical rounds of 46. Caleb Pappano and Ty Burcham followed with 48s. Justin Swift shot 52.

Lucas Shaw led Waldron with a 58.

Completing the Mohawks’ scorecard were Josh Kellems (61), Matthew Thomas (62), Cole Jones (64) and Jack Fischer (67).

 

 

Softball

Morristown 10, South Decatur 9

At Morristown, the host Yellow Jackets scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal their first Mid-Hoosier Conference win of the season.

Nevaeh Cox had a double and a triple, scored two runs and drove in three to lead Morristown (7-5, 1-4 MHC).

Brandi Enterkin, Alexia Rogers and Kaylin Waltz each had two hits. Rogers scored three runs.

Rhylee Moran earned the win, allowing 11 hits and seven walks while striking out five.

The two teams meet again Thursday at South Decatur.

 

 

Monrovia 9, Triton Central 5

At Monrovia, 12 of the Indiana Crossroads Conference game’s 14 runs were scored in a wild second inning.

Triton Central (3-8, 0-4 ICC) scored five runs in the top of the second but then surrendered seven runs in the bottom half of the inning and never scored again.

Athena McGinness drove in four runs and earned the win in the circle for Monrovia (8-4, 4-1 ICC). The senior allowed two hits and four walks while striking out 12.

Lillian Fillippinie took the loss for Triton Central.

Allison Raquet and Hailey Harris had the only hits for TC.

Triton Central travels to Rushville (6-8) Thursday.

 

 

Girls Tennis

Greensburg 4, Waldron 1

At Greensburg, Waldron’s No. 1 doubles combination of Mackenzie Shaw and Megan Bogemann improved to 8-1 this season with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ella Chapman and Janae Comer.

The Pirates won the other four matches in straight sets.

At No. 1 singles, Jenna Foster defeated Waldron’s Nichole Garner, 6-2, 6-2.

Abigail Hoeing topped Josee Larrison at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

Josie Nobbe bested Riley Price at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-3.

At No. 2 doubles, Morgan Cain and Hailey Duerstock defeated Audrey Hogg and Emily Tyree, 6-1, 6-2.

Waldron won a junior varsity doubles match when Grace Ross and Alivia Fischer defeated Clair Nobbe and Annie Pumphrey, 6-1.

 

 

New Palestine 3, Southwestern 0

At Southwestern, the visiting Dragons improved to 9-2 this season with wins at No. 1 singles, No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles.

The other two matches were suspended due to inclement weather.

At No. 1 singles, Olivia Hasenkamp defeated Lauryn Blondell, 6-0, 6-0.

Kaitlyn Mitchell produced a 6-0, 6-0 win over Makinze Belton at No. 3 singles.

And Bethany Blachly and Lily Haeberle bested McKinley Correll and Faith Kelley at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-1.

Ella Rice was trailing at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 5-4 when play was halted.

Jo Harvey and Maddy Potter held a 6-2, 5-5 advantage over Southwestern’s Kyla Robertson and Brooklyn Schneider at No. 1 doubles.
