Five Shelby County athletes advance out of Greenfield-Central Sectional

Shelbyville’s Beau Kenkel, Triton Central’s Brad Schultz and TC’s 400-meter relay team all advanced out of the Greenfield-Central track and field sectional Thursday night.

Kenkel (photo, far right) ran a personal-best time of four minutes, 41.08 seconds to finish third in the 1,600 and receive the automatic berth to the Greenfield-Central Regional next week.

Franklin Central’s Brayden Henkle won the 1,600 in 4:27.7. Warren Central’s Grant Coburn was the runner-up in 4:38.36.

Schultz finished second in the 100 meters, crossing the finish line in 11.03. Schultz split a pair of Warren Central Warriors – Jaely Reeves-Lile (10.82) and Vermont Johnson (11.04) – to advance to the regional.

Schultz returned to the track for the 400 relay with Brayden Wilkins, Ray Crawford and Anthony Dunville to finish second in 43.86 -- .04 off the winning time of Greenfield-Central’s 43.82.

Franklin Central was third in 43.87.

Also scoring top eight individual finishes at the Greenfield-Central Sectional were Triton Central’s Ethan Cales (5th in 110 hurdles, 15.81), Morristown’s Tyler Schonfeld (7th in 100, 11.37), Shelbyville’s Samuel Price (5th in 400, 53.31; 6th in long jump, 20 feet, 7.75 inches), Morristown’s Jacob Batten (7th in 800, 2:09.34), Triton Central’s Brayden Wilkins (5th in 200, 22.97; 8th in long jump, 20-2.5), Shelbyville’s Alex Macharia (7th in long jump, 20-3.5), Shelbyville’s Jordan Marcum (5th in high jump, 6-0) and Triton Central’s Jared Schweitzer (8th in 125-11).

Schonfeld’s time in the 100 was a new school record for Morristown.

Warren Central won the sectional team title with 145 points. Franklin Central was second at 134. Shelbyville finished seventh (27.5), Triton Central was eighth (26) and Morristown 11th (4).

Columbus North Sectional

Inclement weather forced the postponement of the Columbus North Sectional where Southwestern and Waldron were competing. The meet will resume tonight. - to e finish line in 11.03. Schultz split a pair of Warren Central Warriors --

Baseball

Hauser 8, Morristown 3

At Morristown, the visiting Jets scored three times in the fourth and four more times in the fifth to improve to 15-10 this season and a Mid-Hoosier Conference best 11-1.

Eli Miller had two hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs to lead Hauser. The senior also pitched a complete game, allowing eight Morristown hits and two walks while striking out 11.

Jake Rains took the loss for Morristown (10-11, 5-7 MHC). The senior allowed six hits and six walks.

Dyllan Rutledge and Bryce Bryant each had two hits for the Yellow Jackets.

 

 

Softball

Cathedral 5, Shelbyville 2

A three-run third inning proved to be enough runs for Class 3A, No. 9 Cathedral to defeat 4A No. 9 Shelbyville.

The Golden Bears (18-5) managed just six hits off Cathedral starting pitcher Jade Slone. Caitlyn Richardson and Cheyenne Eads each had two hits.

Eads took the loss for Shelbyville, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out four.

Anna Moore had two hits including a triple. Julia Jennings scored a run and drove in two to lead the Irish (17-9).

Shelbyville hosts Greenfield-Central today. A win would secure a share of the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship with 3A No. 3 Yorktown.

 

 

Triton Central 10, Bethesda Christian 8

At Bethesda Christian, the visiting Tigers scored in five of the seven innings and won their fifth game in their last six contests to improve to 8-9.

Brylie Couch had three hits including a home run, scored three runs and drove in three more to lead TC. Allison Raquet had two doubles. Emma Stohry had three hits and Madison Collins had two hits and two RBIs.

Lillian Fillippinie got the win, allowing seven hits and three walks while striking out 10.

Natalie Servizzi took the loss for Bethesda Christian (8-6).

Annie Heim had two doubles and two RBIs. Leah Heim had three hits and two RBIs.

Triton Central hosts Morristown (9-9) Saturday morning in the semifinal round of the Shelby County Tournament. The winner advances to face Waldron in the championship game.

 

 

Girls Tennis

Shelbyville Sectional

Southwestern 5, Morristown 0

The lone quarterfinal match of the Shelbyville Sectional went the Spartans’ way.

Southwestern (3-12) won all five matches in straight sets to advance to today’s semifinal round against Triton Central (15-3).

Morristown finished the season 0-14.

Lauryn Blondell (6-0, 6-1), Ella Rice (6-1, 6-1) and Makinze Belton (6-1, 6-4) swept the singles matches.

Kyla Robertson and Brooke Schneider were victorious at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-1 over McKinley Kile and Brianna Batton.

McKinley Correll and Faith Kelley did not lose a game in winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles over Katie Hillock and Elizabeth Cheek.

The other semifinal match today at Shelbyville features Waldron (7-8) against the host Golden Bears (10-11).

The sectional championship is set for 10 a.m. Saturday.
