Rooks breaks school record in qualifying for state track and field championship meet

No Southwestern High School girls athlete had ever jumped 18 feet into a long jump pit – until Tuesday.

Southwestern junior Lilly Rooks broke her own school record on her penultimate jump at the Franklin track and field regional with a distance of 18 feet, 0.25 inches.

Rooks (photo) finished second in the event and qualified for her second-straight state finals appearance.

East Central freshman Ellie Hill won the long jump regional title with a best distance of 18-6.5. Hill’s teammate, senior Hope Fox, was third at 17-1.

Rooks will compete in the state track and field meet June 3 at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington. The long jump is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

Rooks finished 13th at the 2021 state meet with a then school record of 17-6.75.
