Morristown advances, Southwestern's season ends at Sectional 59

Morristown advanced while Southwestern’s season came to an end Saturday in the opening round of the Class A, Sectional 59 baseball tournament at Morristown High School.

Morristown built a 7-4 lead then held off a Greenwood Christian Academy rally in the top of the seventh inning to advance with a 7-6 victory.

Trailing 4-0, the Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the sectional quarterfinal game at 4-all.

Morristown used a three-run fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead and pin the loss on Greenwood Christian pitcher Preston Van Til. The freshman allowed two hits and three runs (none of the runs were earned).

Trey Harney started for Greenwood Christian (13-9) and pitched into the fourth inning before Charlie Overton took over.

Colton Flint had three hits to lead Greenwood Christian. Harney and Wyatt Schlageter each drove in two runs.

With the win, Morristown (12-11) advances to Monday’s semifinal round to face Indianapolis Lutheran (19-8) at 10 a.m.

The Yellow Jackets defeated the Saints, 9-1 on April 16. Grant Kessler pitched a complete game and struck out 13.

The sectional championship game is slated for 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Lutheran 23, Southwestern 3

The Spartans (6-16) scored twice in the top of the first inning to take the lead but the Saints responded with an 8-run second inning to take control.

Lutheran added six runs in the second inning and nine more in the third to advance to the sectional semifinal round to face Morristown.

 

 

The second semifinal game Monday pits Waldron (7-16) against Edinburgh (5-15) at approximately 12:30 p.m.

The two Mid-Hoosier Conference teams met late in the regular season and the Mohawks prevailed twice, 14-3 and 16-15.
