Shelby County Girls Basketball Tournament: Triton Central, Waldron advance to championship game

It took a pair of strong fourth-quarter performances to get Triton Central and Waldron into the Shelby County Tournament championship game Saturday night.

In the semifinal round Thursday at Morristown High School, Triton Central outscored the host Yellow Jackets 14-2 over the final eight minutes to secure a 45-32 victory.

Waldron held a 30-23 advantage over Southwestern after three quarters and senior Josee Larrison scored six of her seven total points in the fourth quarter to lead the Mohawks to a 41-35 victory and set up a rematch of the 2022 tournament championship game.

Alyssa Benson and Audrey Hogg each finished with 12 points to lead Waldron (4-12), who defeated Southwestern (3-12) for a second time this season. Benson connected on a pair of three-pointers in the first half and Hogg had seven points in the third quarter and 10 of her 12 in the second half.

 

 

Larrison finished with a team-high eight rebounds and three assists. Hogg (5 rebounds) and Benson (4) combined for nine rebounds.

McKinley Correll, Southwestern’s leading scorer, was held scoreless in the first half but scored 12 points in the second half to lead the Spartans. She also had four rebounds and four assists.

Tanna Tatlock finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

In the tournament opener, Triton Central and Morristown played to a 22-all tie at halftime and the Tigers led 31-30 after three quarters.

Maryrose Felling scored six of her team-high 15 points in the fourth quarter to help TC (12-3) pull away. Felling also had four rebounds and two assists.

Hallie Schweitzer had 13 points and seven rebounds. Lizzie Graham finished with 10 points.

Raegan Kleine topped Morristown (5-9) with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Danika Rutledge had 10 points, five rebounds and two assists.

The Shelby County Tournament championship game is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at Morristown. Triton Central defeated Waldron on Dec. 2, 61-25, and took possession of the Victory Bell.
