Shelbyville wrestling delivers Senior Night win over Triton Central

Shelbyville wrestling celebrated Senior Night with a strong performance against a sectional opponent.

The Golden Bears won eight of 10 head-to-head matches Thursday with Triton Central to secure a 58-15 victory at Garrett Gymnasium.

Triton Central’s only victories came at the lowest and highest weight classes where Ayden Nufio scored a pinfall win at 106 pounds over Cruz Nedderman and Hadyn Ball moved up to 285 pounds to defeat Jacob Harker, 11-4.

The Tigers also accepted a forfeit victory at 220 pounds.

Triton Central had opportunities early to gain momentum Thursday but Lucas Kleeman and Andrew Bailey suffered third-period pinfalls at 182 pounds and 195 pounds, respectively that staked the Golden Bears to an 18-0 lead.

The dual match started at 170 pounds where Shelbyville’s Dylan Garvin (photo) scored a first-period pin over Trevor Ashman.

Kleeman trailed Shelbyville’s Carson Linville 4-2 going into the third period and quickly scored an escape to cut the score to 4-3 before getting caught by Linville (in a pinning predicament that scored the win.

At 195 pounds, Brayden Schultz trailed Bailey 6-0 going into the third period but scored a pinfall 62 seconds later in a key match that will affect sectional seeding later this month.

“These kids fight till the end,” said Shelbyville head coach Adam Miller. “We are never really out of any matches, even our underclassmen have been stepping up and wrestling hard. I see nothing but great things coming in the next year or so.”

Ball (photo), a regional qualifier in 2022 and recent winner of the Spartan Classic in Connersville at 220 pounds, moved up to heavyweight Thursday to face Shelbyville’s Jacob Harker, who finished runner-up at the same Spartan Classic at 285 pounds.

Ball, the first Tiger to collect a bracket win at the Spartan Classic since Bailey Kesterman in 2009, got out to 5-1 and 8-2 leads after the first two breaks and rode out Harker for an 11-4 victory.

“He has high expectations this year,” said Triton Central head coach Trey Miller. “Friday night (at the state finals) is Hadyn’s goal and I think he can do it. I think he can win the sectional. There are several tough kids in the regional. If he wins the regional, I think he has a great shot at making it to the state finals.”

Nufio, another regional qualifier from 2022 who finished fifth at the Spartan Classic, pinned Shelbyville’s Cruz Nedderman at 106 pounds in three minutes, 56 seconds.

It was all Golden Bears after that, which included forfeit wins at 113, 145 and 152 pounds.

At 120, Shelbyville’s Isaiah Havens pinned Tucker Jones in 3:35.

Jaylen Eads (main photo) followed with a hard-fought 8-6 win at 126 pounds over Braxton Zimmerman.

Ethan Watkins trailed TC’s Dayne Bailey, another 2022 regional qualifier, 6-4 after two periods at 132 pounds but prevailed with a 13-9 victory.

“I thought we wrestled really well tonight but the last couple of seconds we lost points here and there and lost a couple of matches we were winning. We just couldn’t get anything going,” said Trey Miller.

At 138, Brady Bryant pinned Ethan Booth in 3:38.

And in the final match, Andrew Burton defeated Bohdan Rollo, 11-2.

“The program is coming along. It’s been a long time coming,” said Adam Miller. “It’s starting to show from the club program to the middle school on up to the high school.”

Triton Central travels to Maconaquah Saturday for an invitational tournament. Shelbyville competes Saturday in the Guerin Catholic Invitational.
