Shelby County Boys Basketball Tournament: Triton Central, Waldron set to meet again in championship game

Triton Central slowly kept building momentum to pull away from Morristown and set up a rematch of the 2022 Shelby County Tournament championship game.

The Tigers led the Yellow Jackets, 35-32 at halftime Friday at the Bee Hive in Morristown then scored 44 second-half points to complete a 79-54 victory.

Eli Sego, Luke Faust and Isaac Morgan combined for 37 second-half points with four made 3s and a 9-of-12 performance from the free-throw line.

Sego, a freshman, finished with a game-high 28 points. He also had five rebounds and five assists. Morgan followed with 19 points and Faust had 18 to improve the Tigers to 9-3.

Jameson Palmer scored 19 of his team-high 21 points in the first half to keep the Yellow Jackets (1-11) in the game. The senior also had eight rebounds and two assists.

Colin Kieninger finished with 16 points but Morristown managed just 22 second-half points while the Tigers started rolling.

In the opening semifinal game Friday, seven different Mohawks scored to lead Waldron to a 46-35 win over Southwestern.

Lucas Shaw scored a season-high 16 points for Waldron (6-5) and had three rebounds and four assists. Lucas Mitchell finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

The Mohawks used a 10-2 second quarter scoring advantage to build a 19-10 lead by halftime they never relinquished.

Carter Snepp led Southwestern (0-11) with 16 points and three rebounds. Jonah DeArmitt added 10 points and three rebounds.

Waldron gets a rematch with Triton Central, who defeated the Mohawks on Dec. 1, 63-48. The Tigers took possession of the Victory Bell after that win and will defend it tonight in the championship game.

Waldron will attempt to repeat as county tourney champions after defeating the Tigers, 51-50, in the 2022 tournament finale at Waldron.

The boys championship game will follow the Shelby County Girls Basketball Tournament championship game between Triton Central (12-3), winners of 10 straight, and Waldron (4-12), the defending county tournament champion.

Triton Central defeated Waldron, 61-25 on Dec. 2.
