Seniors lead Triton Central to Shelby County Boys Basketball Tournament title

Isaac Morgan scored 12 of his game-high 25 points in the second quarter to propel Triton Central to a 68-54 victory Saturday night in the championship game of the Shelby County Tournament in Morristown.

Morgan helped the Tigers (10-3) outscore Waldron 17-7 in the quarter to build a 32-18 advantage.

Lucas Mitchell scored 16 of his 25 points in the third quarter but it was not enough to help the Mohawks (6-6) get any closer than 52-34 going into the final eight minutes.

Luke Faust had 10 points in the third quarter to keep the Tigers comfortably in the lead. Faust finished with 18 points seven rebounds and three assists.

Morgan was named the tournament’s MVP after his 25-point, four-rebound, three-assist performance. The senior had 19 points and three assists in Friday’s semifinal win over Morristown.

The Triton Central seniors, (from left) Hallie Schweitzer, Isaac Morgan, Lizzie Graham, Cooper Baugh, Riley Ross and Luke Faust, pose with the Shelby County Victory Bells Saturday in Morristown.

“I am really proud of the seniors here and the way the young guys played around them,” said Triton Central head coach Kyle Ballard. “It was a roller coaster there for a little bit. We had a hard time extending the lead. Waldron kind of hung around, a lot of credit to those guys, and Mitchell really kept them in it for quite awhile.”

Faust and Morgan combined for 43 points and seven more Tigers got into the scoring column to keep possession of the Victory Bell, the county’s traveling trophy, and capture the Shelby County Tournament title trophy.

“I’ve never been the fastest kid or the most athletic kid so I’ve always studies angles and how to use my body to create those opportunities for my teammates and myself,” said Morgan of how he models his game.

Bryce Yarling had 13 points and four rebounds in his final county tournament for Waldron. Mitchell, also a senior, finished with a game-high nine rebounds and three assists.

Triton Central hosts Milan (3-7) Saturday in Fairland.

Waldron is at potential sectional opponent Jac-Cen-Del (7-5) Saturday in Osgood.
