Golden Bears need overtime to knock off Olympians

Shelbyville needed overtime to collect a second win this season over a potential sectional opponent.

Ollie Sandman (main photo) hit a tough 17-foot jumper from the wing with 48 seconds left in overtime to seal a 50-49 overtime win over Columbus East Tuesday at William L. Garrett Gymnasium.

Sandman finished with a game-high 22 points to get the Golden Bears to 5-8 this season.

Ben Sylva scored eight first-quarter points to lead the Olympians (1-8) to a 16-7 lead at the first break.

Sandman hit four straight three-pointers in the second quarter to get Shelbyville within 26-22 at halftime. All 11 of Shelbyville’s second-quarter shot attempts came from outside the 3-point arc – and that was an issue for Shelbyville head coach John Hartnett.

“We knew that if we just got some movement with our guards we could get into the paint almost anytime we wanted,” said Hartnett. “We were just worried (Pete) Coriden was a big presence down low. We told (Ethan Lambert) to be ready for the dump down for the layup. A couple times that worked.

“Tonight, we were actually bigger than some of the guards out there and I told our guys to use their strength and use their size and they did. We came out in the second half and started taking it to the basket a little more and we capitalized.”

Coriden scored in the low post to start the second-half scoring and push the Olympians’ lead to 28-22 before Shelbyville scored six straight points to tie the game.

Damon Badgley (photo) banked in an off-balance runner just outside the lane and got the Golden Bears their first field goal from inside the arc since midway through the first quarter.

Jackson Parker followed with a floater in the lane and Sandman scored on a fast-break layin after a Columbus East turnover.

Just over three minutes later, Badgley scored on a drive in the lane and hit the free throw for a 3-point play and Shelbyville’s first lead of the game.

Columbus East did not lead the rest of regulation.

With the game tied at 44, Shelbyville’s Luke Brinkman hit one of two free throws with 2:02 left in the fourth quarter to give the Golden Bears a 45-44 lead.

Coriden did the same with 36 seconds left to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Sylva, who led Columbus East with 18 points, hit a pair of free throws to start the overtime scoring.

Lambert (photo) made 1 of 2 free throws at the other end then scored on a slick slip pass from Brinkman to put Shelbyville up 48-47. Brinkman had four points, six rebounds and four assists off the bench against the Olympians.

Sylva added two more free throws with 2:40 left to put the Olympians up one last time.

Julius Dailey had a chance to add to the lead but missed two free throws with 78 seconds on the clock and Sandman hit the game winner 30 seconds later.

Shelbyville travels to Pendleton Heights (4-8, 0-1 Hoosier Heritage Conference) Saturday for an afternoon game starting at 1 p.m. Due to water damage at Pendleton Heights High School’s gymnasium, the game will be played at Pendleton Heights Middle School.

“We know Pendleton Heights is very capable of being a very good team,” said Hartnett. “They play a tough schedule. I told our guys don’t look at their record. … Kind of like tonight, I told our guys don’t overlook (Columbus East) and they proved it. You can’t overlook anybody when you come out here. You have to execute and get the job done.”
