Wrestling: Shelbyville's Harker, Triton Central's Ball crowned conference champions

Shelbyville’s Jacob Harker and Triton Central’s Hadyn Ball were crowned conference wrestling champions Saturday.

Harker (photo) won the Hoosier Heritage Conference’s 285-pound weight class with a 3-0 record.

Harker opened the day at New Castle High School with a 68-second pinfall victory over Yorktown’s Isaiah Hopkins.

In the semifinal round, Harker pinned New Castle’s Braydwn Bennett in 2:12.

With a 5-3 victory over Greenfield-Central’s Brayden Fleener, Harker earned his first HHC championship.

Greenfield-Central, ranked No. 13 in the Class 3A state poll, held off 2A No. 2 Delta, 226.5-208.5, to claim the HHC title.

Shelbyville finished seventh in the team standings.

Ethan Watkins also advanced for Shelbyville into the championship round. Watkins, competing at 132 pounds, pinned Greenfield-Central’s J.J. Harlow in 3:15 and Pendleton Heights’ Alex Heineman in 49 seconds.

Watkins was defeated by Delta’s Dalton Tuttle in the championship match.

Also for Shelbyville, Carson Linville placed third at 182 pounds and Jaylen Eads (126 pounds), Andrew Burton (152) and Luke Dwyer (220) finished fifth in their respective brackets.

Shelbyville is at Rushville Thursday for a dual match.

 

 

Ball (photo) only needed two wins to capture the Indiana Crossroads Conference championship at 220 pounds Saturday at Beech Grove High School.

Ball opened the event with a 45-second pinfall of Scecina’s Leonardo Romo. The Triton Central senior received a forfeit win in the semifinals.

In the championship, Ball defeated Lutheran’s Jack Beard, 3-0.

Four more Tigers reached the championship round.

At 106 pounds, Ayden Nufio lost to Monrovia’s Gavin Ash, ranked 11th in the latest state poll. Nufio accepted a forfeit in his opening round match then defeated Cascade’s Logan Schnarr, 10-2, in the semifinal round.

Braxton Zimmerman defeated Monrovia’s Jake Hampton, 3-0, and Speedway’s Austin Turnquist, first period pinfall, to advance to the championship at 126 pounds.

Cascade’s Dominic McFeeley defeated Zimmerman to claim the ICC title.

At 182 pounds, Lucas Kleeman pinned Beech Grove’s Jacob Conaway in 2:25 and advanced past Cascade’s Liam Farmer via disqualification to reach the final round.

Lutheran’s Joe Davis topped Kleeman, 8-2, for the title.

And at 195 pounds, Andrew Bailey scored two victories before losing to Beech Grove’s Julius Florence, 11-3, in the championship.

Bailey pinned Lutheran’s Gage Meaney in 1:41 then topped Speedway’s Miles Miller, 5-4.

Triton Central also got fourth-place finishes from Dayne Bailey (132), Bohdan Rollo (160), Trevor Ashman (170) and Austin Myers (285).

Cascade, ranked No. 2 in the Class A poll, won the ICC title with 251 points. Monrovia was runner-up at 246. Beech Grove finished third (230) and Triton Central was fourth (158.5).

The Tigers travel to Indianapolis Ritter Saturday for the Ritter Invitational.
