Shelbyville football game against Delta canceled

Shelbyville High School’s football game tonight at J.M. McKeand Stadium against Delta has been cancelled, according to the SHS Athletic Department.

Rising COVID-19 cases within the SHS football program forced the cancellation early Friday morning.

Tonight’s theme was Middle School Night with all fall middle school athletes being introduced to the crowd. There is no word yet if that will be rescheduled.

In addition, participants in Tuesday’s youth cheerleading camp were to perform at halftime tonight. That has been rescheduled for the Sept. 24 game, with the campers performing at the end of the first quarter.

The Delta game cannot be rescheduled within the timeframe of the regular season. Both the Eagles and Golden Bears will be left with eight-game schedules this season and will be one game short in the Hoosier Heritage Conference standings.

Shelbyville’s week four game at New Castle was already scheduled for Sept. 11, a Saturday afternoon contest at 1 p.m., due to a Friday-night scheduling conflict at New Castle for Sept. 10.

The Shelbyville athletic department will update the status of that game early next week.

Shelbyville only has two home games left on its schedule – Sept. 24 against Yorktown and Oct. 8 against Mt. Vernon.
