Meridian Park Family Aquatic Center not ready to open Saturday

The Meridian Park Family Aquatic Center will not open Saturday in Shelbyville.

The planned opening has been delayed to finish pool surface repair work after a leak was fixed. Inclement weather has delayed the repair work, according to Shelbyville Parks and Recreation Department director Rob Van Til.

“We recognize this is not a great start to the summer and it will disappoint a lot of people,” said Van Til at Wednesday’s parks department board meeting. “We apologize but there a lot of things that we need to make sure are done right and everything that is put in is done correctly.”

If the weather allows, Van Til wants to have the pool open Monday, Memorial Day. If that is not the case, he expects the aquatic center to be open Tuesday.

Other than the final repair work, the facility is ready to open, according to Van Til.

The splash pad (photo) at Blue River Memorial Park will open Saturday. There is no admission price to enjoy the splash pad at the city’s largest park.

Van Til encouraged those interested in knowing when the Meridian Park Family Aquatic Center will officially open to follow the parks department’s social media accounts.

In other parks department board business Wednesday, Noah Henderson updated the board on the Morrison Park project.

Volunteer day for cleanup and restoration work in the city’s oldest park is Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
