Larry K. Phares, 83, of Shelbyville

Larry K. Phares, 83, of Shelbyville passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at his home.

He was born May 3, 1938, in Shelbyville, the son of Lloyd and Mary (Mosier) Phares. On November 25, 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Marla D. Cole, and she survives. They were married for 61 years.

In addition to Marla, Larry is survived by his daughter, Lorrie L. Pierce of Shelbyville; son, Brian K. Phares and wife, Robin, of Sarasota, Florida; grandchildren, Ashlee Marie Thomas and husband, Matt, and Anna F. Ingle and husband, Ben; great-grandson, Henry Thomas Ingle; and several nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Kelly Renee Pierce; brothers, Robert “Bob” Phares and John Phares; and sisters, Janice Mollenkopf and Doris Klingenberger.

He graduated in 1956 from Shelbyville High School, attended Atlantic Christian College in South Carolina, and received his Master’s degree in education administration from Butler University. Larry was the guidance director at Southwestern High School, retiring with 52 years of service. Through his career as a guidance counselor, he helped many students further their education, by helping them apply for scholarships.

He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion and Eagles Aerie Lodge No. 766.

Larry enjoyed golfing, with his son and brothers-in-law. He also enjoyed working in his yard.

He loved to create memories with his family, especially his grandchildren.

A Celebration of Larry’s life will be held at a later date.

Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
