Ruth Ellen Thompson Garner, RN, 82, of Milroy, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Indiana University Health Methodist in Indianapolis.

She was born January 31, 1941, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Paul S. and Frances A. (Sever) Thompson.  On December 18, 1960, she married her husband of 62 years, Hugh W. Garner, and he survives.

In addition to Hugh, Ruth is survived by her son, William Hugh Garner and wife, Michelle, of St. Paul; grandchildren, Tyler Garner, Kyle Garner and Nichole Garner; great-grandsons, Henry and Lain; brother, Lyman Thompson of Greenfield; sister, Barbara Thompson of York, Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, David Thompson.

She graduated in 1958 from Waldron High School.  She received her registered nursing degree from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing.

Ruth retired from Major Hospital in 2009, where she was a Registered Nurse for 48 years.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the American Nurses Association.

Ruth and her husband, Hugh, enjoyed attending the sporting events of the Waldron Mohawks.

Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
