Samuel Vanderploeg, 84, of Shelbyville

Samuel Vanderploeg, 84, of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at his home.

He was born October 23, 1938, in Downey Precinct, California, the son of Samuel and Olive Maxine (Johnson) Vanderploeg.  On April 13, 1963, he married his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Jean “Betty” (Batkins) Vanderploeg, and she survives.

In addition to Betty, Sam is survived by his extended family, Mark Mennonno and wife, Jackie, of Indianapolis; sister, Rosalie Heaton of Canada; brother, Mike Vanderploeg and wife, Debbie, of Boggstown; and grandchildren, Alex Mennonno and fiance’, Brianna, and Erika Mennonno, both of Indianapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Judy VanHorn.

In 1956, Sam graduated from Union Township High School in Bargersville, and attended Purdue University.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Sam was a member of New Life United Methodist Church.

He was a farmer.  Sam was also formerly employed at Estes Design and Standard Food Stores.

Sam enjoyed Indian Relic Artifacts, going moose and deer hunting and sharing his garden vegetables. 

In 1982 and 1983, he was a director for the Shelby County Beef Association.

He also leaves behind his dog, BeBe.

Services will be announced by Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
